I know it's not the most factual channel. But did anyone see the "BATTLEFIELD DETECTIVES" on the history channel (Canadian)? It was about Mr. Wittmann and who killed him. It was actually not bad here is the link Uncovering the Battlefield with Norm Christie 1 - Battlefield Mysteries - History Television They recreate the actual positions of the parties involved (through pictures) and they determine that it was the Canadians who destroyed his tank. Anyway...I thought it was very well done.
I loved the Mosquito one. I think I also saw something on that on the Lost Evidence as well about the pilots, missions and the planes. Hard to believe they were made of wood?
another documentary British granddad may have killed Black Baron - Telegraph (the other thread is closed) People were being mean..lol I'd like to see this, and compare the 2 shows.
Yes I saw it, JTF-O. It was clearly determined that only the Canadians 4th Hussars were in rang and in position to take the Shot. And now the British are taking Claim by a thread just posted as British Tank taking out "The Black Baron." British Rubbish! It's to be noted that in the Press, many Canadian battles were seen as British forces operations like in the Italian Campaign. Canadians Know how to hit a target at a long range, That's been Chiseled in Granite. Ask The US Army and The Corps they where so impressed they handed the Canadian Snipers Medals. The Canadians did allot of the dirty work as the British took all the praise and the glory for it in WWII.
I can only ask why this great fixation on Wittmann and why the spurious claims his death is a 'mystery? The facts of the matter were established some years back and it is amazing the amount of time and effort devoted to 'proving this' and 'proving that' when it is all bollocks. The fact that this man was in the fabled SS and he used a fabled Tiger tank has guaranteed endless speculation from those who drawn to this combination. Fans simply can not accept the fact this 'god' was disposed of in a routine action by a lowly Allied soldier and no one even noticed his passing. Cue thread 1,245,678, Title: New Evidence proves Wittmann comitted suicide
The same fascination surrounds the death of von Richthofen. In my mind, Carisella and Ryan laid that to rest in 1968 with their book, "Who Killed the Red Baron." Very similar situations too.
Here's a little Wittmann fact for you: in 1943, after destroying a Russian tank, Wittmann and his crew helped smother the flames of said destroyed tank and requested that the 2 surviving Russians be given proper medical treatment.
I heard he always wore clean underpants too. Fulsomely marked with zeig runes mind, but clean.* *Historical note; The above may not apply to the 8th of August 1944.
And yet not a single Stug. 'kill' for Wittmann is included in his famous score of 130-ish Why is that? I presume the 'lucky' Soviet crewman were not among the millions who were deliberately killed in German POW camps?
wonder if it was another Stug of him Kompanie that did the damage ? interesting how things get blown out of hand to mythical proportions for both sides and what we know now having free access to many internet locations with serious research behind the pages, never before so easily found. you couldn;t do that for some of us serious types back in the 1970's writing numerous letters to national archiv's world wide hoping you letter would even get there and then wait 3-6 months of longer..............blah, blah
In the quote I posted Wittmann was in the StuG III, not fighting one. I think initially he did serve in one but I'll double check. There is no guarantee that the crew were killed in a POW camp if they survived their burns. If they did survive and were given such a fate, I don't see how Wittmann would be to blame or anyone else of his tank crew unless they were the ones who personally saw to it. Erich: I've had to deal with that scenario in recent years for some research I was doing, not fun at all. Edit: Here you go, http://hosted.wargamer.com/Panzer/wittmann.htm Posing by a StuG III in 1941, http://hosted.wargamer.com/Panzer/witt7.jpg
I was pointing out that though it is claimed he had a high 'kill' count for his Stug. days not a single kill from this claimed period is included in Wittmann's final tally. Looking further into the kill claims for Wittmann throws up more confusion. If we go back to his Stug. service it says that on 21/11/41 he had 25 victims. It also appears he was awarded 56 kills for the period July 1943-7/1/44 56 kills made up of: 30 tanks in the 5 days of Kursk 13 tanks 21/11/43 6 tanks 9/12/43 3 tanks and 1 SP 5/1/44 total 53 so 3 are adrift somewhere. There seem to be no victims claimed November 1941 until July 1943. Add in the 61 claimed January 8th to 29th 1944 and we get 142 (25+56+61=142)rather than the 117 commonly claimed. It appears the Stug total is never added to his kill claim list, can anyone explain why? Note how his Tiger kill score seems to skyrocket in late 1943 and then DOUBLE in January 1944
The same show was on lastnight on the history channel again..lol Here is a link to it. It's worth a view. (5 parts to watch) Once you see them..let me know what you think
