See for me socialism is more about socialisation of our nation's lifestyles within certain principles based more on humanitarianism and building a sense of community than political dogma or soviet style figures and quotas. To be more precise I'm interested in it for the UK, and not trying to spread some international revolution. British socialism is very different though, it's about free schools and hospitals rather than thousands of tanks.
Stefan, I'll not say much more on this subject other than it is not my problem that someone who makes poor choices in his life, such as not finishing school, having children out of wedlock, choosing not to work (yes people do all of this, and on a regular basis) receives "assistance" from me, taken from what I have sacrificed and worked hard for all of my life. I give what I choose to give and being involved with the associations I am involved with, it is quite a goodly amount of time and money. I understand that there are people who are unable to help themselves and need a hand up (what fool would be that heartless?), but the bar gets lowered every year in deceitful attempt by those who seek public office, in an attempt to more or less buy votes through the treasury. When robbing Peter to pay Paul, you can always count on the support of Paul. Greed, by other names, is still greed. Greed will always rear it's head, whether 70 or 700 years pass, where riches and ease of life is concerned. I would prefer those who wish to pad their own accounts do it via their own hard work and not mine. I was not raised in wealth, although some in Third World countries might differ, and I am not wealthy now. Quit work and I'll soon go hungry, as well as will my family. But I have too much pride in myself and my capabilities to allow the government to take from my neighbor to compensate for my laziness and/or my unwillingness to prepare for difficulties. Please note, I did not say infirmities, although prudence would dictate that I would prepare as best I can so as not to be a burden on society. You also misinterpret my confiscation reference. Any tax is confiscation, it's only a matter of degrees. At some point it gets burdensome. As far as US political thought coming down to taxes, that has been a part of our political discussion since 1773, I don't see it changing anytime soon. Capitalism "screwing the community" is, well, nonsense in it's purest form. I can look around at any number of public works in my community alone that were funded by philanthropic capitalists and it is repeated throughout the nation many times over. If you or anyone else wish to discuss this further, let's do via PM or create a group, as I do not wish to monopolize this thread anymore than I already have. This thread asks us about our politcal leanings, not for us to proselytlize to the world.
Fair enough Jeff, probably best to leave it there anyhow. I don't expect to change anyones political opinions, just that people don't dismiss socialism on the 'stop taking my stuff to give to that guy who doesn't' have any stuff' argument. Frankly I think most peoples objection comes to practicality (i.e. that there are many people who will abuse any system designed to support those who cannot support themselves). I guess it all goes back to the orphaned quote:
You just described socialism. As I said, a true socialist state, cannot be a totalitarian one. Slip, as I explained, if you stoped working before you reachretirement age or sufer some severe work accident, you'd not get a penny from the state. It's as Steffan said, there are people who do not have anything. Not by laziness or lack of will to work but because they simply are underpaid and have little to no rights. Cheers...
Indeed, sorry if I wasn't entirely clear on that. Effectively I agree with what you are saying, that the BNP are never going to win any real power however as long as they are rearing their ugly heads in elections the mainstream powers will hopefully be forced to do something about them.
