Yeah I sort of missed that angle to things, well done! YouTube - Monty Python Argument Sketch Best and Warm Regards Adrian Wainer
I believe if the politicians had their flunkies break out the history books, or peruse throught wikipedia long enough, they would have enough names of worthwhile battles and famous ships to name new carriers after. How many CVAN's do we have now? And what are their names? We probably only add a couple of them to our inventory every decade since they cost so much and have a long service life. I can guarantee that most of the ones we have are named for politicians, some, if not most are of who are still alive and kicking. I just don't see how a person can proudly say that he was a career politician, or what erks me the most is when they name ships, buildings, bridges or whatever after themselves. That and when they refer to their time in politics as their "service" time to the country. Don't that beat all? There, I feel better now. Time for a RC Cola and a moonpie.
That's a good idea, maybe Blackwater can develope a maritime division to combat this problem since nobody seems to want to do anything about it. A jeep carrier armed with cobra gunships or apaches would do the trick. And marines attacking on jet skis! Now that would make a nice movie....
I am sorry but That Adrian is quite the "Special" Man. I would ask him to watch what he says... My aunt is from Jerusalem and she is a proud islamic - Canadian. As far as Canada Fighting the IsalmoFacists We canadians are only fighting for 2 reasons. One will piss off many people because it is the truth. One - Because you americans started somthing and of course my governemnt having no Back bone followed and sent 100 + canadians to die in a war we have no reason to be in. second - WE are trying to install peace in that region of the globe by peace keeping. CF is there for up keep and reconstruction rather than seek and destroy. Thank you
Nicked...pinched.....nabbed....collar felt....come with me sir....your under arrest....see this batton mate....name and address please sir. Get in the paddy waggon theres a good chap....
Ah yes, the English language with all its different meanings. Maybe I'll start a thread concerning those words y'all use that have different meaning from the way we use them over here. Some similar words and phrases for nicked would be; cuffed and stuffed collared scooped grabbed had hands laid upon clothes lined took down/out and my favorite - he was "protected and served" There are more, but I am saving them for the thread that I am planning to start.
I take it you mean the war in Afghanistan since the Canadian Government officialy stayed neutral in Iraq. In which case I would think that the involvment in Afghanistan is completly within the obligations of the NATO charter. The 9/11 attacks where declared by NATO to have met Article Five of the Alliance. As well as the UN passing resolution 1368 (2001) Article 5 The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area. Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security . Article 6 (1) For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack: on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France (2), on the territory of or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer; on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer. UN Security Council Resolution 1368 (2001) September 12, 2001 The Security Council, Reaffirming the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, Determined to combat by all means threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, Recognizing the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence in accordance with the Charter, 1. Unequivocally condemns in the strongest terms the horrifying terrorist attacks which took place on 11 September 2001 in New York, Washington (D.C.) and Pennsylvania and regards such acts, like any act of international terrorism, as a threat to international peace and security; 2. Expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families and to the People and Government of the United States of America; 3. Calls on all States to work together urgently to bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of these terrorist attacks and stresses that those responsible for aiding, supporting or harbouring the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of these acts will be held accountable; 4. Calls also on the international community to redouble their efforts to prevent and suppress terrorist acts including by increased cooperation and full implementation of the relevant international anti-terrorist conventions and Security Council resolutions, in particular resolution 1269 of 19 October 1999; 5. Expresses its readiness to take all necessary steps to respond to the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, and to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations; 6. Decides to remain seized of the matter. [end] Are you implying that other NATO or ISAF countries are doing nothing but creating unrest and destroying everything we come across? I sure hope not.
What I meant was to attack what that asshole Adrian said about us Fighting Islamo - Facists... I meant nothing aginst anybody else so if I insulted anybody I am sorry he just really really pissed me off! He is in good canadian english "A Dumb Ass"
Whoa, whoa boys. Civility is an art that is expected to be practiced here and potty words gets us banned from school computers. We want the former to occur on a daily basis and the latter not at all.
Thanks for stepping in slipdigit, and not letting things get out of hand here. Can't we all just get along?
I agree I am sorry for what I said, I guess I dont know when to quit while I am ahead! I again am sorry.
Personally, I'd prefer that we name our carriers after something a bit more important than a politician. I'd like to see us go back to traditional names for these national assets. Some suggestions: Independence America Liberty Freedom Republic Fortitude Or, past capital ship names like Saratoga or Lexington, maybe start with states for carriers names. These seem far more appropriate than some politican's name on a carrier's a$$ end.
You're right Terry. There are a host of good, currently unused carrier names out there, like Yorktown, Lexington, Franklin (named for the battle, not the man) or Intrepid. Heck, dig up some good ol' British names like Indefatigable or Indomitable. Now that is a ship's name! Much better than the John C. Stennis. I would not put it past Robert Byrd to try to have his name plastered all over one. He has it on everything else in West Virginia.
Here's a list for the names-of-ship-thinker-ofers at the Naval part of the Pentagon to work with when coming up with names of new carriers. This list was taken from an article in Wikipedia. Plenty of ideas here, excluding names of politicians, especially live ones. And there have been hundreds of battles that the US has been involved in to select as a name for new carriers. I think that states names would be nice too, but I think that those names are being used for submarines now, along with names of cities too. On a side bar about the USS John Stennis. Since he was from great state of Mississippi, the carrier's nickname is the "Johnny Reb." I thought that was pretty cool, if not un-PC for this day and time. Looks like the last carrier not named for a politician was the USS American in 1965. Shame on the self-serving politicians. Wait, what am I saying. They have nothing to shame. The list of past and present USN carriers are as follows; Name Commissioned Class Status CV-1 Langley 1922 Langley-class, lead ship Sunk February 1942 65 nm south of Tjilatjap, Java CV-2 Lexington 1927 Lexington-class, lead ship Sunk May 1942 in the Battle of the Coral Sea CV-3 Saratoga 1927 Lexington-class Operation Crossroads (Baker) test target CV-4 Ranger 1934 Ranger-class, lead ship Scrapped CV-5 Yorktown 1937 Yorktown-class, lead ship Sunk June 1942 in the Battle of Midway CV-6 Enterprise 1938 Yorktown-class Scrapped CV-7 Wasp 1940 Wasp-class, lead ship Sunk September 1942 during the Guadalcanal campaign CV-8 Hornet 1941 Yorktown-class Sunk October 1942 in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands CV-9 b) Essex 1942 Essex-class, lead ship Scrapped CV-10 b) Yorktown 1943 Essex-class Museum CV-11 b) Intrepid 1943 Essex-class Museum CV-12 b) Hornet 1943 Essex-class Museum CV-13 b) Franklin 1944 Essex-class Scrapped CV-14 b) Ticonderoga 1944 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-15 b) Randolph 1944 Essex-class Scrapped CV-16 d) Lexington 1943 Essex-class Museum CV-17 b) Bunker Hill 1943 Essex-class Scrapped CV-18 b) Wasp 1943 Essex-class Scrapped CV-19 Hancock 1944 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-20 b) Bennington 1944 Essex-class Scrapped CV-21 c) Boxer 1945 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CVL-22 Independence 1943 Independence-class light carrier, lead ship Scuttled 1951 CVL-23 Princeton 1943 Independence-class Sunk, October 1944, Battle of Leyte Gulf CVL-24 Belleau Wood 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CVL-25 Cowpens 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CVL-26 Monterey 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CVL-27 Langley 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CVL-28 Cabot 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CVL-29 Bataan 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CVL-30 San Jacinto 1943 Independence-class Scrapped CV-31 b) Bonhomme Richard 1944 Essex-class Scrapped CV-32 b) Leyte 1946 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-33 b) Kearsarge 1946 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-34 Oriskany 1950 Long hull Essex-class Scuttled as an artificial reef, May 2006 in the Gulf of Mexico [1] CV-35 Reprisal Cancelled (August 11, 1945) Long hull Essex-class Cancelled CV-36 b) Antietam 1945 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-37 c) Princeton 1945 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-38 b) Shangri-la 1944 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-39 b) Lake Champlain 1945 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CV-40 b) Tarawa 1945 Long hull Essex-class Scrapped CVB-41 a) Midway 1945 Midway-class, lead ship Museum CVB-42 a) Franklin D.
