Hi there, found you're site whilst researching my two Grandfathers and Great Uncle, found the Great Uncle-Henry D Conkey, RMLI on board the HMS Vindictive in WW1 in in the Zeebrugge Raid, sadly he was a casualty that day in 1818. I'm looking for advice on how to get the service number for my Grandfather Stephen Conkey, Henry's brother, he was a career soldier and served in various places including Poona..he retired a Captan acting Major. Any advice how to get his number relatively easily from all you vets here?
Welcome matey, after my fiancee saw your home town she jumped for joy since her heritage is from North Ireland (although herself Australian she is a proud Irish as well) and her father was born there. Anyways' hope you enjoy your stay mate.
Howdy Cap'n. I hope you can find what you are looking for. If you strike out here, try ww2talk.com. That forum is just crawling with Limeys.
Welcome to the forums. Did you manage to see the Britian at war magazine issue dealing with this raid. Very informative. If you haven't got a copy... Try and get the back issue. Autumn time I think it was.
Welcome Captain, you mention 1818, I suppose you meant 1918 ? You could try the National archives and also some site like service pals. They have a lot on information
Hello All, I am new to this venue and am a WWII lover, well it was a bad war for all , but it was many years ago and many of my family were in it on several sides. I have always loved reading into the history of all sides involved and find it very facinating that all sides made so many monumental mistakes. Anyway I personally have no animositiy towards anyone on any side. I also love collecting anything from this time period and have several pieces that I would love any help to identify them with any help or questions. I am 50 yo and learn something new every day.. with the help of people sharing their tales and experiences. This looks like one damn good site...cheers! mrawlgrip
Hello all, havnt been back here since my first post above. I visited the Belfast British Legion museum and found very helpful ex-servicemen working there. As my Grandfather had been in the RIR or RUR if you like, their records in Northern Ireland are very complete and was able to get alot of info. I managed to get my Grandfather Conkeys service number from the London Gazette as he was an officer and all promotions usually are entered there. I have paid and sent away for his full service record to the Scottish records office-awaiting this still as it can take six- nine months or more to receive. I also got in touch with the author Paul Kendall who wrote about the Zeebrugge raid and got a complete run down of my Great Uncles fate with pictures of him and his grave in St James Dover. Just thought I would share this with you all and if it is of any help to anyone else who searching for information.
