Trying to reach the men at Arnhem we had to live on German rations.....Yuk! bloody great big tins of herrings that looked like anti-tank mines. No cigarettes...only German cigars we captured, rolls of cabbage leaves with a cigar leaf on the outside Yuk. I went over Nijmegen bridge just as it was captured. ordered to get as near to Arnhem as possible on the "Island" Sapper
As it happens I got back from Arnhem only today. Spent four days there seeing Overloon, Grossbeek, Oosterbeek and Arnhem. Also visited the German cemetary at Venray, and the British Oosterbeek cemetary.
