    Your friend found this on a battlefield ??? I do not think this is ww2 ,are you sure it was not a training area as this looks to be the spigot from a 120mm pre rifled mortar round. These are fitted to the bottom of the rifled round to hold the propelling charge,when the mortar is fired these fall off not far from the firing point,we often find these at work ,i have attatched a picture of the complete round and a 2000 dated spigot that i have

    Might have been found on a de-mil'd NATO training area.

    We were not sure what it was...all I know the founder tackled himself at this thing in Germany. Maybe it was training area. But thanks for letting me know what it is. :D
