A friend of mine sent me this. I don't know if this is really from the newspaper, but even if it isn't I think it makes sense. I'm sending in my application. I love this plan! This was an article from the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on Sunday. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix the Economy?" I thought this was the BEST idea. I think this guy nailed it! Dear Mr.President, Patriotic retirement: There's about 40 million people over 50 in the work force; pay them $1 million apiece severance with stipulations: 1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed. 2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed. 3) They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.
What happens when the money runs out and they live to be 103? I think this model is flawed for that reason. In 1950, American men lived to an average age of 65 (women to 71). Now the numbers are much higher. The way to fix the economy is not to give anyone anything but to find ways to stimulate innovation. Corporate taxes in the USA should be cut with tax incentives given for domestic growth and hiring a quid pro quo.
Of course, in the real world, you are right. There must be plenty of people who have ideas, inventions, and innovations that would be truly stimulative if they had the incentive and the means to bring them about. But my suggestion is far cheaper than anything proposed so far. Plus, many over 50 would do what was suggested, and put the rest away "for a rainy day", and have the interest to use.
If the Federal government would change their ways and stop all of thier waste then that would help alot, however I work for the IRS and they would rather die than change anything !
Oh, now he pipes up...Oooo errr Martin....Methinks your taking the orange stuff, or more commonly known as the Pith helmet.
Over YOUR dead body! I'm over 50 and doing my utmost to get back IN the economy plus creating more jobs other than mine. And nobody paid me the $1 mil, by the way. Your plan sucks more than the Boston Underground ventilation system!
First of all, it is not called the Underground in Boston. The "T" will do nicely. Second of all, unless things have changed in the past few years, the T is not ventilated at all, so it cannot suck because it is not existant!
Never one for apportioning blame me....Trust my betters as we all should. The blame game is a negative aspect of life. We have the best minds on the job. I'm sure. But I have a few nominations for the retirement package....But they wouldnt drop to the 1 million...You need to up it a little. YouTube - Bird & Fortune - Financial Advisor - www.PTBDirect.com
Quibbles. The greater the reason for the above-mentioned plan to suck more than the demonstrably likewise above-mentioned contentious ventilation system. My argument stands, independent of the metaphor employed.
You drop a million in my bank account, I'd never darken the door of any place of employment again, ever. And with the tight-wad Scottish blood coursing through the viens of my wife, I could die at 103 and still have 95 cents of each dollar I started off with. But unfortunately, that is not the case with all, as some spend two dollars for every one they earn.
If one does not live beyond their means, one should have plenty of money to survive on. I was guilty of that once-learned my lesson and now am able to save a decent percentage every month. However, my savings as of recent have been badly depleated because of loaining almost all I had saved-to my Brother to help pay for materials and muscles-in getting a Duplex he owns-fixed to rent out. I have not been this low in my savings in several years and feels very uncomfortable.
