The entire cover of the Review section of today's London Observer Sunday broadsheet consists of a colour photo of a familiar, glowering face : - Exclusive - DAVID IRVING - first interview from inside his Austrian prison cell Inside are two full pages of the interview with German author Malte Herwig and another colour photo of a business-suited Irving holding a presentation PPsH41. Even though the interviewer is disparaging of Irving, you can sense that the disgraced historian loved every minute. Very few other historians who haven't had a book published in nearly ten years get this sort of coverage. The trial is set for 20th February.
I viewed three of his books years ago and at that time he seem to be ok, but now hearing his views blaming everyone else of the Holocaust, and painting a rosy picture of Hitler sorry no. I just will not read any of his books any more and I find him a sad person, he should have gone in to retirement and faded off the scene. But no he keeps creeping out of the wood work; personally I don’t believe he will ever change his ways, and admit his view point is wrong.
David Irving strikes me as no fool he should be treated very carefully, or it will back fire on those who seek justice. Remember Herman Goring in the early stages of his trial at Nuremberg?
Martin, spot on the times I have heard David Irving stick up for Hitler and slam all the rest, at the end of the day only one man was top dog that man was Hitler, and he must had know and issued orders. [ 27. January 2006, 11:54 AM: Message edited by: Richard42 ]
UPDATE - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4710508.stm So his trial starts next week lets all hope it dose not turn in to a show trial or a kangaroo court, let real justice do its work.
That's a heavy sentence for soemone of his age and raises serious issues as to what historians can and cannot speculate about. He will inevitably be viewed in some quarters as a Right-wing martyr.... We've just seen people inciting racial hatred and murder in London streets and walk away whistling
I thought that was an interesting remark he made “Why should Governments tell me what I can write” As for his sentence I think he will go to appeal sometime in the next three months and probably be deported back home. May be.
Of course it is bad that you could get in jail for two years for your opinion only so that will make you think. But Irving definitely has been publicly telling about his views so I suppose he´s been asking for this. I guess he´ll be out in six months or less though.
I don't usually listen to the radio but the BBC aired a fascinating documentary this afternoon about the Irving High Court case, with contributions from all the major participants - including Irving. He certainly gives himself away when he's talking....
This is the strange thing he is not stupid in fact quite clever, and yet he has this mental block. Hitler never gave orders for the mass killings? Why has he got this strange block, at the end of the day the final solution order had to come from Hitler? His stubborn attitude has done him no favours what so ever.
This BBC article is a few days old but informative: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4733820.stm There is a nice little video of the trial as well, worth a look for sure. I find Irving's quote interesting: "I'm not an expert on the Holocaust"
From Robert Harris' 'Selling Hitler' ( Faber, 1986 ) : ' Looking down upon ( Irving ) as he worked, from the wall above his desk, was a self-portrait of Hitler, presented to him by Christa Schroeder...'I don't drink', he would say, 'Adolf didn't drink, you know...' '
Happened across this while looking for something completely different. Dirt being dished back, or hitting the fan? http://www.fpp.co.uk/Canada/FDCIfile/BoDSmear1990b.html No.9
