The tripartate agreement originally also stipulated the actual figures allowed to serve at one time and the percentages allowed in each army I believe...I seem to remember that being in there somewhere. Ghurkas still serve in Indian armed forces as far as I know, but I'm going back a before the noughties. Fijians, then I'm with them...Why cant I go live there. I want to live in Atrarctica but this freedom of movement lark has got me beat...Why cant we live where we want to, and then Richard can be a gypsy.
The tripartate agreement did stipulate numbers, which regiments would go where (note they continue to carry battle honours earned with the British army with the exception of those in battles against Indian rebellions), pay, conditions of service and so on. Part of it was about stopping Gurkhas from picking the British army over the Indian.
Thats ok, 3 cheers via 3 posts...Now Gordon will have to do his homework and quote the correct numbers and costs etc. He will if changes mind though, take full responsibility for the idea of reversing the previous position of the courts. Smile to camera and say, we are a government that listens. Dont care, as long as they are allowed in though.
Never upset a Ghurka...I was informed yesterday by a colleague of my brother that I was in fact incorrect, thats wrong to others, incorrect to me...Although in my time and his the Sultan of Brunei paid for the resident Ghurka Battalion in Brunei, paid for evrything, the units of Ghurkas serving there, did so on rotation so most served at one time in Brunei. He also points out that if it wasnt for the sultan of Brunei, and his anger with previous defence cuts as to how it affected the Ghrukas and the protection of his oil fields, the Ghurka battalions would have been reduced far quicker in numbers before Hong Kong draw down than they actually were. I'm pleased to be corrected by a Ghurka and will gladly hide under any stone he so chooses. As an aside, I was also told of the charitable funds raised in 80's that stlll to this day helps Ghurka vetrans in Nepal in time of need. Canadian govt actually give 2 dollars for every dollar riaised around the world. There is a fund set up by a citizen of the USA female I believe that is still in existance today. This is why whenever Nepal suffers natural disasters, that a few months later you will always see a Vetrans home rebuilt whle others arond are still laying flat. Brigadier Birdy Smith then a junior officer tells the story of what happened when the Ghurkas were ordered to take the heavily defended village of Tavoleto a dominant point in the defences of the Gothic line, Italy. They took a terrible pounding from German mortars and machine guns, no food came up to them, their telpehone link was cut, and the Germans introduced a Hindustani speaker onto their radio net. The situation was so bad that even the Ghurkas hesitated at going forward, In desperation Smith reminded them of their own saying: It is better to die than be a coward....and he threatened to go forward alone with his orderly. The effect he wrote was electrifying, as if I'd touched an open nerve...unleashing the pent up fear, frustration and anger, all compounded by hunger and lack of sleep. Jemadar Jitbahader Rai of 9th platoon Shrieked 'AYO GURKHALI, and the war cry was repeated on the right by 7th platoon...And they were off..The lead platoons set off like a pack of hounds baying for blood. Shouting and shrieking as if they were charging against the final objective....It was to be the first but by no means the last time that I was to thank the Almighty for putting me on the same side as the Ghurkas. Bravest of the brave, Most generous of the generous, Never had a country more faithfull friends than you.
I was going to say about the Brunei thing, a mate of mine is a Captain with the Gurkhas and basically rotates between Catterick, Brunei and Afghan. His pics from his tours are great, whatever the situation there is always a Gurkha grinning like a lunatic somewhere.
I see there was some victory in Westminister but I am not jumping up and down with joy as we have been there before.
Richard, when are you going to bite the bullet and join the rest of us on the barricades? N.B. Don't worry if you don't see me, I'm probably on the other side somewhere, I'm afraid they pay better
What folk get paid....I was never told..Which side of the barricade pays most then.... Can you hear the people roar that is the sound of angry men la la, dont know the words..la la and we wont be fooled again.. Andrew Lloyd Webber....French not Ghurkas but you get the drift... I shall always be on the side of those that shout the loudest.... Its generally the safest.
Funnily enough, when it was offered I turned it down which was a bit odd. Urqh, I just tend to make sure I'm on the better armed side
I don't think Stefan is with Tony Blair's lot you know those builder folk so it must be Trilateral Commission that's it! Or is Stefan one of the Illuminati?
