Police diversity officer keeps job after Nazi ‘joke’ December 24, 2006 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2517821,00.html A POLICEMAN responsible for teaching other officers how to be racially sensitive has escaped being sacked despite standing by as a Jewish subordinate was subjected to a tirade of Nazi salutes by a colleague wearing a Hitler shirt. Sergeant Henry Beresford, who did nothing to stop PC Mike Parker in his “grossly offensive” Hitleresque rant before Gareth Hill, a Jewish PC, was fined and allowed to continue in his job.
Things like this are difficult, it seems the issue in this case is that he failed to stop his colleage AS HE WAS IN FRONT of the jewish colleague. Does that mean its ok if he was doing his Hitleresque impressions without the Jewish colleague there? Behvaiour of this sort is always reported in such weird ways, its wrong at all times, not just when in front of people who would be offended
I agree totally submerge. Why is it that this kind of behaviour is only worthy of criticism if it is in front of someone who takes offense? Surely it is inappropriate conduct for a policeman regardless of the context? That said, the chap who stood by and watched, well, how many people actually do stand up and object when this kind of thing is going on? The vast majority of people turn a blind eye.
It is a manner of saluting. Just what is so "inappropriate" regardless of who it is in front of? Perhaps not all Germans used it but it was a salute.Like the swastika, part of military history. Heck, it's even hard to find WW2 German model airplanes with a swastika on it.
Well by that logic there is nothing inappropriate about saying 'I detest jews' is there? After all, it is part of history just like the salute etc. The point is rather that this individual was not engaged in a duscussion about the historical significance of certain arm gestures but rather was subjecting his colleague to a 'Hitleresque rant' punctuated by Nazi salutes. Is that appropriate conduct at any time?
While I am not defending an idiots actions; a lot of times it is not a major item to give the 'Heil Hitler' salute as sarcasm or farce. It is a pity that some people act like fools, and others can't show a little tolerance.
I can't think of many situations where it is appropriate to wack off a Nazi salute and shout Zeig Heil. Ok it can be funny in comedy programs or whatever but most of the time it is in rather bad taste to my mind. Not sure where tolerance comes into it, I honestly don't think it was genuinly intended as a piece of satirical comedy. It was a police officer being racist simple as that. Incidentally, the PC Hill is my mates neighbour I just found out. Small world.
I don't see what it has to do with detesting jews. After 60 some yrs. it's time to move on to what is happening today. There is more than enough PC'rs to go around. There are people who detest poles, russians etc. So what? Is the "jew" supposed to be above the others? It never ceases to amaze me how there are so many appologists and defensive individuals for just one group of people.
not really liking your tone Woods I made the point, in my opinion that popping a salute and shouting zeig heil in front of anyone is pretty damn wrong. You may see it as a simple salute but it offends millions, not just Jews (ill leave the quotation marks out). Why should people not defend or apologise to jewish people, gypsies, homosexuals, countless nationalities, etc.
