I have a late relative who, in 1955, described himself as Major xxxx FVA (Ret'd).

We think he served in Singapore and that's all we know at the moment.

Can anyone tell me what FVA stands for

    Thanks,

    Rob

What country was he from, and what branch of the military if that is known?

Have you tried sending a quick email to the Army website, or a British Army research site, asking? You never know, they might forward it on to someone who could help.
There is also the possibility that it might be a Singapore medal/award or a civil admin department that he may of worked on behalf of. I have just done a quick search on Google and I can find brief references to a FVA HQ Admin still in being in Singapore, so that may be another line of enquiry.

I find references to FVA standing for the Film and Video Archive of the Imperial War Museum, which doesn't fit in the context that you provided, but may have been an attribute to a photograph or video clip as opposed to a branch of service or award.

    Just a thought.

    -whatever

EDIT: Or, possibly he worked with/for/in the Archive.

You might want to go over to www.worldwar2talk.com. It's a predominantly British/Commonwealth site. I'm sure you'd have no problem finding out what you need over there. Good luck, and let us know what you find out.
