Another newcomer here. You may call me Mac (though I am a female ), I'm 20 y.o. and a college music/performance major. This is an incredibly intriguing site and I've already lurked here a while, soaking in text and information (and in some cases absolutely stunning photos). I was born in the US and have never left the country (a brief foray into Canada doesn't count!), but I have two Grand Uncles who were soldiers of the Wehrmacht. Although in different divisions, they were supposedly both KIA within a week of each other during the Ardennes Offensive. My grandfather was able to evade military service in Germany as he had his right leg severely amputated as a boy. I admit that my interest in WW2 is relatively recent spanning only a few years but strengthening as of late, beginning as a failed attempt to learn more about my two elusive relatives...drawing from the meagre smattering of info we already have (accompanied by a few stories related to us by aforementioned grandfather shortly before his passing). It has since expanded into a deeper thirst for knowledge regarding the era that I hope this forum will help me quench. Some other misc. stuff: I am an amateur paranormal investigator, and I prefer being outdoors hiking, kayaking, fishing etc., or if possible -- travelling! I am determined to see and experience the globe before I die. I do have a few relatives currently serving in the U.S. forces, including a cousin who is a new Marine just shipped off to Afghanistan, and an uncle who used to repair choppers for the A.F.. I tend to find all aspects of aviation and warfare history equally fascinating...exactly why I am not quite sure...but there you go. Looking forward to meeting you all and being part of the forum. Hope I was not too longwinded with my little book...
Welcome Snapdragon, great to have another aviation fan here! I hope you will enjoy your stay with us, it's a great site I would love to hear the stories of your ancestors who were in the Wehrmacht.
Howdy Snapdragon. Don't the masculine odor of the surroundings scare you off, we do have some gracious ladies who also contribute. Jump on in.
Howdy Mac and welcome to the forum. This is a great place to be so come on in and join the fun. Glad to have you with us and happy posting
Thanks everyone, I'm sure I'll enjoy myself here. Skipper - certainly, I have a few written pages copied from what my grandfather remembered of his time as a German civilian during and after the war, as well as some details of his two brothers. Perhaps I'll post them a bit later -- he was one of those people who wanted the story to be told to others, to make sure few will forget. I don't believe he would object to my sharing them on this forum.
Welcome, Mac! You'll enjoy it here...and you'll learn a ton. Tell your cousin thanks for his service!
Thank you! I am already learning quite a bit. And I will be sure to, once I manage to get a chance to talk with him again, heh.
Hi Snapdragon, I just joined myself because in my readings of World War II, I constantly come upon unanswered questions. And so far I've had all the answers from these guys. It's great. Bob
It will be a pleasure to read those acccounts Mac. Take your time and post whatever you please, when you can.
Howdy, Mac! Welcome to this fine place! I am sure you will enjoy your time here. You mentioned that you are a music/performance major. We have a few threads that explore the music of WWII. You may want to seek those out. What instrument do you play? Cheers!
Thanks for the welcomes. I look forward to sharing what little info and photos I have, as well as reading and learning from other accounts here. Why, my partner is a 2 yo Romanian violoncello dubbed Sophie. I will definitely have to find those threads, music history/ethnomusicology is one of my interests and I may get a doctorate in it in the future. Besides I am a fan of that particular musical era... Thank you!
