Hello Everyone! Every year on the anniversary of D-Day on the first weekend in June, my local airport has a ww2 airshow, which has alot of vintage airplanes, a nice flea market and veterans. The main hangar is set up for people to talk to veterans of ww2. This year I met 6 original members of the "Band of Brothers" 506th and had them sign one of their books. I also met another member from the 506th, Ed Shames and bought his book and had him autograph it. I also met a survivor from the U.S.S. Indianapolis, Dutch Van Kirk, the navigator from the Enola Gay, 3 members of the "filthy thirteen" pathfinders 506th, Frank Speer who was in the 4th fighter group Thomas Griffin, who was in the doolittle raid and Robert Ferguson who was a P-61 Black Widow pilot. All the other years I went I never could get near anyone to talk to but this year I was determined to because sadly none of them are getting any younger and I wanted to show my respect for their services. Here is a link to the website for the airshow WELCOME TO THE MID-ATLANTIC AIR MUSEUM'S WORLD WAR II WEEKEND, it is deffanitly worth going to, there were so many other vets I didn't meet but plan to next year.
That is close enough for me to go to. I will make it a trip next year. The village set up looks great. Thanks for the link.
I can't believe I didn't hear about this. And it's close! I will have to make sure I can attend next years event.
thanks for the reply's everyone. I took about 300 pics on my cellphone, i'll try to post them, im not that literate to computers but ill figure it out. The flea market is pretty good too, I found a few gravity knives for sale and sheathed knives from the war for sale, a guy even had a pair of canvas boots in mint condition from ww2 for over 200 bucks, i'd never buy them but its neat to see that kindof stuff is still floating around. They are working on a p61 black widow they pulled out of the jungles in new guine back in the late 80's. There are only 4 remaining, this will be the only one flying in the world! can't wait to see that in the air!
hey, just letting everyone know I posted pics in the gallery somewhere, I can't find them myself lol.
That sounds incredible, I really admire Buck Compton a lot I wish I could meet him one day to let him know, its sad just like so many former soldiers the pain he went through seeing people he knew closer then brothers for more then 2 years getting greatly wounded. Just like they said during the tv show Band of Brothers you can't think less of the man because of how he felt after seeing Toye and Guarneere on the ground.
I don't have any s to give you but did rep ya. Anyway, of all the ones you met-I have met Dutch Van Kirk @ a Gunshow in San Antonio several years ago. He was very nice and was generous with his time. I also got him to sign an 8x10 pic for me-and then I got to visit with David Lee "Tex" Hill-who was the CO of one of the Flying Tigers Squadrons. At the time-Tex leived in San Antonio. It was great to meet both of these great guys. Tex signed an 8x10 for me showing he and three others standing by one of their "Tigers" and this pic was also signed by one of the other men in the photo-though he was not presant at the Gunshow.
yeah u guys should try to come out here one year, u can get autographed stuff on ebay all the time, its another thing tho to actually meet and talk to that person on a personal level. They also set up "breifing rooms" where the vets talk about their war stories, pretty cool.
