I'll let y'all know where I've been for the last few months! I'm building a Hot Dog truck! Can't find any work.......so I'll make my own work! Lord willing I'll make a go of this!
I'd really like to get your opinions on your favorite tasting dog! Around here it's mostly Vienna, they are good but I had one the other day that was fantastic! I'll tell ya later who made it!
Let me know what your favorite is!! A local dog, a mass produced one, it doesn't matter!!

    later....scott

Hi Scott, I don't know if you get these where your at but-the Johnsonville Brats are fantastic. Other than that-Oscar Meyer and Bar S are pretty good. Heh heh, when one is starving-any brand will do-except for Hill COuntry Fare-which I tried to feed to some starving stray cats-who turned their noses up at them and decided to keep on starving. I was shocked too-but it dawned on me that if stray cats wouldn't eat Hill Country Fare (which is a brand that H.E.B.s carrys) then those are not fit for human consumption ;-))

Oh and, did you know you can get a 4-wheeled bicykcle that is made for operation hot-food stands out of. Not only is that much more inexpensive-but you get your exercise in as well. Try googling 4-wheeled bicycles or carts-and you will find them. I thought about doing that as well. These bicycle-carts are really cool and don't cost an arm and a leg to buy. You can also get them custoom made.

I wish you were a mamber of JWMB website. There are two really nice people who are on that site and who own hotdog stands where they live in California. They make a pretty good living from their business.

    Take care--Carl.

PS, if you ever go there-you can ask them for any advice-their names are Jim & Sue Sutterlin. One of their usernames is: Chester7777 and I think the other is Jim and the mrs?? or something like that?

You might like to look at this site, I personally liked the Boar’s Head Beef franks I tried once, but I was surprised the Oscar Mayer Deli franks beat them out in this review.

And Vienna Beef didn’t even make it into the top five. I also hear that Sara Lee bought out Best’s Kosher, and closed them down, so this review must have been written before this January.

Hot Dog Chicago Style - The Search for the Perfect Hot Dog

Here in Montana, we used to have a local packing plant (Pierce), that went out of business in the nineties. They had a brand of "Old Faithful" under which they sold natural casing franks, polish sausage, bologna, and thick cut pepper-corn, smoked bacon. Those were my favorite "dogs" of all time. They made two meat blends of frank, one was pork and veal, and the other was beef and lamb, and they had one which was all beef. They all came in six foot "ropes" and you had to separate each frank for use! Now those would make great dogs from a truck, but sadly you would have to go into the meat processing line instead of the "hot dog truck" business!

When the Super Bowl rolls around each year, I beer boil up three pounds of polish sausages (natural casings) made by a local guy, and serve ‘em on steamed Wheat Montana "hot dog buns". With brown mustard, ‘kraut, diced onions (optional), and either a swiss or sharp cheddar cheese slice (choice) nobody turns ‘em down. Heck I even had one guy who swore he would never eat sauerkraut under any circumstances, but at the end of the day he had downed three with ‘kraut.

I agree with Carl on the Johnsonville Brats. Particularly the Jalapeño and cheese. Not to spicy, just enough to make it great!

Koegel Meats Serve The Curve Probably the only thing Flint, MI still has going for it! I have no idea what their distribution area is beyond MI.

    BTW, good luck!

I'm going with the Johnsonville Brats as well, covered with smothered onions on a fresh poboy bun, with roasted japepeno peppers of course. Add to that a great big pile of chile cheese fries and a couple pitchers of draught beer and that's all she wrote!

And for dessert, ROLAIDS, crushed and sprinkled on soft serve vanilla ice cream....

The J'ville brats are tasty..........however, you can never go wrong with either "Nathan's" or "Miller's" natural casing franks.

Believe it ot not? but, i've never tried a Nathans-yet. I herard they were well worth it though. There is another national brand I can think of-only not it's name. It has something to do with Isreal or something of that nature? Anyway, I have tried one of those and those are very good as well-just expensive.

Hot dogs to me are salty so I go for the Turkey dogs. The J'ville brats are a must as well as kiobasa links.

BTW, good luck on your venture. At least you are not sitting on your behind waiting for salvation from the 'O'

I think you should look for a butcher in Chicago who makes his own hot dogs/ brats/ etc. on premises. Butchers are usually better than brand names, I think.

That said, I am a vegetarian so it has been a long time (25+ years) since I've had a hot dog. I do think you should include turkey dogs on your menu and be aware of anyone who wants soy/tofu-based dogs -- I am not alone out there!

I'd be interested in seeing the finished product, your hot dog truck that is.

Nothing like a Brat with a Frankfurter or a Strassburger saussage. Add some strong Amora mustard on top of it and bingo !

Wow! I wasn't expecting this much of a response! You guys are great! Carl I definitely agree on the Johnsonville Brats! Another brand we have up here is "Old Wisconsin", moe of a traditional veal brat! Great stuff!
Thanks for that article Clint! Got to tell you a funny story! I went to a food dist. shop and he sold me one foot-long dog, told me to give it a chance. When I asked who made it, he kind of hesitated and then said, "we keep the name off the label on purpose, because people wouldn't buy them, because they were Oscar Meyer! I tried at boy was I surprised! That was a great tasting dog!
    Thanks Mike and Doc!
I actually just contacted the Koegel Meats people to see if they can get me a few dogs, so we'll see! But thanks!
A58, I hear with the onions, I love sauteed onions!!
formerjughead, never heard of Millers. I'll look them up, thanks!
Carl, I've never had a hebrew national either!
Thanks Ike! That line made me laugh alot!! :)
DGM, great idea! I have talked to a few guys. One in particular has great dogs! They are made of beef and pork, no all beef dog, but who cares, it tasted great!

Skipper, you are showing that your time in the states was well spent!
Thanks again to everyone! Keep those ideas coming! As Ike said, I can't wait for the pres. to bail me out so I gotta find a job on my own!!

Thanks for reminding me of the old Wisconsin Brat. I used to enjoy those at the Summerfest except that your mustard is as mild as your beer. :)

It's a pretty big truck, behind the drivers seat it's 16 ft to the back doors, and just over 7 ft wide! Not tall enough though! I had to raise the roof a full 12 inches!!

Don't judge our mustard by that generic yellow crap from French's. There are a number of great mustards over here, my fave happens to be Gulden's Brown Mustard, but I have tasted other great mustards in the spicy brown category, Gulden's just happens to be my favorite. My ex-wife was truly in love with one from Hickory Farms which was a brown mustard with honey. I thought it was ok for dipping califlower into, but not on a DOG!
