You might not know this, but just prior to the Battle at Alam el Halfa (also in some sources called the first battle of El Alamein), Rommel asked to be relieved due to bad health, and the asked for his replacement to be Guderian, of Eastern Front Fame. At the time, Guderian was not employed anywhere, but had been pensioned due to confrontations with Hitler over strategy.
Now, Alam el Halfa was, in my mind, pivotal, as the Axis still had the initiative, while the Allies were getting stronger and stronger, large shipments of materiel being on their way from the US.
As it was, Rommel had sent a detailed plan over how he intended to conduct the battle to Berlin for approval, but this plan had been intercepted by Allied intelligence, and consequently they knew it all. If we assume Guderian had been given command, and that he had made his own plan, the Germans suddenly gain the element of surprise.
Does anyone know wether Guderians and Rommels approach to tactics (Rommel in N-A almost always swinging round the southern flank of the Allies) differed??

Guderian would not have built the german defensive fortifications, (well he would have for his infantry to fall back too) but he was a good supporter of the best defense is a good offense and i could see him launching a very daring yet successful strike at English rally or staging areas capturing large amounts petrol nad destroying the English armor with their pants down, its just kinda guderians style.
