Howdy Ron, good to have you here. What books have you authored? Tell us more of your father and other family members. Thanks for your service also.
I have written "Taming the Sooner State" "The Bad Boys of the Cookson Hills" "The Tri-State Terror" "The Bandit Kings of the Cookson Hills" "The Rise and Fall of the Poe-Hart Gang" "Armed and Dangerous" and am finishing "Irish O'Malley and the Ozark Mountain Boys," all with New Forums Press Stillwater, Ok.....My Pa was in the invasion of the Philippines,(Thrill of his life was visiting the new WWII monument in DC before he died) Uncle served with Patch in the landing in Southern France while my Mother-in-Law was a nurse, served in France and Germany 1944-45-at big field hospitals. Although she was stationed in the rear was nearly overran at Battle of the Bulge. She remembered around Christmas time 1944 watching tanks heading East bumper to bumper for three days and nights during the counter-attack. Also remembered the "Poor wounded boys", she called them. Broke your heart to hear her tell it. She met and later married an ambulance driver over there....
In addition..(I'm a writer and can get pretty windy so bear with me)..My Uncle Bob was with the first troops to enter Dachau and he met and married a Polish DP who passed away last year without ever being able to master the English language. During the war she was basically engaged in slave labor and afterwards drifted to Berchtesgaden where she worked as a maid and met my uncle.....Dad joined Army at age 17 and others in his unit dubbed him "kid." He remembered the Philippines as hot, dusty and full of damn bugs. He drove a truck and remembered a POW camp named Baggioo (Probably misspelled). On the troopship coming home he saw the film Lollitta with Glen Ford and always enjoys his films from then on. He was a small man and adored Audie Murphy....My Father-In -Law was a con. objector (Quaker) but volunteered for ambulance driver.I respected him for doing his duty even if it meant not carrying a gun...
