The DOE provides a rolling breakdown of the costs of a gallon of gasoline at Gasoline Components History

Rip off government. Britain actually has close to the cheapest fuel prices in the world, excluding taxes and subsidies. Unfortunately we have amongst the highest fuel taxes in the world.

Regarding diesel prices, Germany puts a 0.47 euro tax on a litre, the UK 0.615 euro (54.19p)
Vat is higher in Germany, but the tax rate overall is still lower.

That's the worry. The government have used the collapse in the oil price to increase fuel duty repeatedly. If the oil price goes back up to $140 a barrel then petrol will go up another 30p or so. We could be seeing £1.50 a litre in a year or 2.

And if the pound drops against the dollar because of the state of the government's finances, it could go higher still.

It's not just petrol, VAT is still in place on all the items that used to attract VAT. The rate just dropped from 17.5% to 15%. If you go out and buy a car or computer or TV, you'll still be paying 15% VAT.

Paid $2.69 a gallon on Saturday, driving a Hemi Dodge that gets 14mpg on a GOOD day, with 1400 pounds of scrap metal in it. Sold said scrap for some cash, had to gas up later in the day after a bunch of runnin' around....gas was $2.89. 20 cents up, same store, 7 hours apart. Lame. Luckily the gas hog truck wasn't mine. MINE gets a whole 17mpg.

Interesting to see the difference in prices... especially for our Eastern rogues. I feel your pain

Here in Pennsylvania, prices range from about $2.30 (across the bridge in New Jersey) to around $2.60. A lot of the price is state tax, so I think Clint's earlier analysis is pretty good.

Hi Clint, im not sure what all the breakdowns are costing here with the exception of what my Bro in Law explained on how much it costs-at least the Refinery he works for. I should be talking with one of my Nephews soon-who travels arounf the COuntry also doing some sort fo specialized wirk at various Valero owned Refineries. I THINK one of his jobs is to help the newly purchased long-since closed (thanks to enviromentalists and such) Refineries that are slowly coming into operation. Anyway, im also going to see if he can enlighten me a bit of what the costs are in Taxachuttsetts. I know it's higher there than here-just don't know how much ;-))

I doubt it, it isn't like he gets the money in the end, it gets funnled back into the police, NHS and so on.

Still I wish I had filled up yesterday! £40 for half a tank is mental!

But on the positive side the high taxation on petrol leads to the development of better cars and a better environment and healthier people.
But I can talk easy on the topic as I live in a big city and am not dependent on my car.

1.26 euros a liter (about the same price as in Germany) that would be about 5.60$ a gallon in the U.S.......

You might hate this but, it actually dropped about 5 cents here yesterday ;-)) The nearest gas station to my home is a little over half mile away and they were at $2.39 when I walked past t yesterday afternoon. Well, I went by there again late last night testing a used car-and saw it had dropped down 5 cents.

When I was in Germany in late 2000, I offered a deal with Susanne to pay half of her gas costs for out 2 week tour through Germany. We stopped off at a place called: Elf, and I useed my Visa CC to pay for the gas. I was surprised that it cost a little more than I was aware of-I think it took about $95.00 or so-to fill the gas tank on her 1990 Audi. I knew gas was high in Germany (back then in my area-it was slightly over $1,00 a gallon) but, I didn't mind flipping for half the bill as she was doing all the driving while i was trying to catch up from jet-lag.
