Hello my name is Kris, I stumbled on this website while searching for information on my grandfather's service during the war. I must say I have really enjoyed the past few weeks that I have been on, just reading all the different stories from all over the world...its been amazing. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one seeking information about their father/grandfather/uncle's service during the war. My grandfather didn't talk about it much and I was never allowed to ask him because it upset him too much. Since his death a few years ago, I have been talking to my kids about their great grandfather and his service, this is what actually got me into researching him. I started to encourage my nephew to actually interview his grandfather, who served in the British Navy in Korea, he served on 3 ships all of which were sunk ( what a case of bad luck!) Good luck and keep posting those stories!!
I take it the avatar is yourgrandfather. Welcome. Have you researched the UK ships on navynet? A good site and very inclusive.
Thank you all for your welcomes! yes the avatar is my grandfather, he actually served in the Royal Canadian Naval reserve in 1943 at the age of 17. My mom still says he was far too young to have entered and she blames the war for his attempted suicide years ago. As for his ship that is one of the many questions I have about his service. From his naval record, which I hope to post, has his only ship as being the LCI L 299. Funny I had been watching a program called Bloody Normandy one night and I found out that there is a famous picture of his landing craft (who knew!) I am currently trying to locate either someone who knew him or if anyone has any pictures of him during his service ( we only have 2 pictures of him in the Navy, the avatar one and one with him and his mother). Thank you once again for the warm welcome!
Hello Kris and welcome to this fine place! I am sure you will enjoy your time here and we will enjoy learning of your research. I have to point out that being on three ships that were sunk might have been unfortunate in one sense, the fellow in question was actually quite lucky to have lived through all three sinkings! Cheers!
Welcome Kris. You might try looking at this thread, or checking posts by macrusk, who has extensive links to Canadian involvement in WW2. http://www.ww2f.com/information-req...wwii-related-research-i-e-family-history.html Keep us up to date, and we'll give you what help we can.
will do thank you! I have received all that I can from the National archives of Canada, the rest I guess is up to me. I plan on posting on the search thread, just haven't had the time to do so, 3 kids keep me quite busy as well as trying to research my Nonno's experience during the war. Although he never enlisted, he lived and worked in Germany during the war, and I know that there are just oodles (for a lack of a better word) of stories that he has just waiting to come out . He is currently 94 so I really have research my stuff as his memory is not as sharp as it was.
Welcome on board That's an interesting story. Hope that you can find some answers. You know that LCI means Landing Craft Infantry....
