You know what! Why bother eh? All you are concerned with is having a go at me. No matter what I posted you woulld have found fault. I could have said oh I would like to be out on the Atlantic with the Bolivian Navy and you still would have found something. Are you quite finished or do you have more? No other force comitted war Crimes then? No don;t be silly it was all the Waffen SS. The Soviets on the other hand where Angles.
Id like to add my two penneth worth, as I do.....Although I am willing to listen to anyone on their understandings of units and warfare etc and believe everyone gets their say until they on occasions go past the acceptable. That doesnt refrain me either from looking at the SS of any shape and form and saying in my quaint British way, thanks but no thanks. Yes I know of Russian atrocities and they after all were our allie, morally no lesser is excused by a greater. But I remember Wormhouldt in 40 And I remember The Norfolks too in 40 and I remember Sepp Dietriech also, pity he didnt stay in his ditch when the bullets stopped flying. But Im biased, Im British. Im also human.
That would be original and I don't remember anyone accusing the Bolivian Navy of any war crimes. The Soviets did, but it's not very often that people show up here defending their war crimes. I would doubt that. The Angles and Saxons performed a successful Germanic invasion of Great Britain in the 5th Cent. AD (someone had to). You're watching the wrong History Channel show.
I'd wish to serve during D-Day and especially Bastogne, so I'm thinking 101st airborne division would be perfect. Man Bastogne mission was amazing, One winter month in Belgium under the sky, without winter uniforms, short on supplies, ammo. Those guys sure were heroes.
[ a successful Germanic invasion of Great Britain ] in the 5th Cent. AD (someone had to). You're watching the wrong History Channel show.[/QUOTE Well I would dispute that, Did I tell you about my great great great, well you get the thread...Uncle Paddy the third, or celtisised version as we celts didnt have Angicised in them days..so was Paddy the tird not rude, its a fact...Well anyway, he as the Irish do, volunteered for service in Great Britains forces at that time, as Irish have done since time Immamorial or some such word....He left his diaries to family and I have read his version of this Germanic Invasion....It was thwarted for a while when the Royal Air Falcons of the assorted kings and big jobs at the time set about the Germanic pigeon recce forces. All would have been well if this had contiued...except, the Germnics being a militiristic race, swapped their attacks from Britains chicken sheds and concentrated all their pigeon dropping missions on the priests and lords of the lands houses.....Britons at the time being a clean race and not yet willing to learn the lessons of futre history...Im not sure thats possible but anyway....legged it up north...and sailed the coracle fleet to some land known then as Canweda. My uncle seeing the battle lost, annotated his diary....tch..tch...you dont want to do it like that...should have sent the kingfishers into attack the Germanic ports in Brittany...but that was a lesson not to be learned for many a year to come...but one the Britons took note of and waited many years to apply....Uncle Paddy bless him retired to Ireland where he went about his peaceful business with his family until some Guy called Essex arrived and got taught a lesson in Celtc manners...to no avail...That Cromwell geezer sneaking in the back door when all us Irish men loyal and true were out fishin....or pirating as it was called then....All got tans too...Somalia was good pickins in them thar days to be sure...Ill get me coat...Im going now sorry....
Looks like time for another referral . http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/24222-soldier-strips-romance-out-life-war.html
You got the point man. I know war wasn't like fun at the playground, a nice game You can got for your PC nowadays like Medal of Honor, or Call of Duty and others, where You can restart when something goes wrong. It was hell on earth and no game, movie or even book can take us there and show us the real feelings, thoughts, and sacrifice. I know we have different reality now, and we can't really say how we would act in such situation, we can only assume. And on one hand I'm happy and thankful they fought for us and I'm glad they did that so I'm free now, and on the other hand I still wish I was there in Bastogne, cause it was glorious action. I know it was hard, I know many have died, but I still think I would be ready to sacrifice my life for others there. But still I'm just thinking that, because I'm safe and don't have to deal with this problems, probably if there was a chance for me to fight at front, my mind would think different... But we can never say what if we would be in this situation, cause we aren't. We can only assume.
Did you happen to catch this one too http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/26310-wish-i-could-have-fought-wwii.html
No, all I wrote was my poit of view. I get a feeling You think of me like a kid who watch a movie about nice brave people who killed half a german army, and I want to be like them. I know I'm new to this forum, but I'm not new to the history, I read a lot of books about WW2, a lot of personal diarys. And as a grown man, I'm familiar with this topic, I know it wasn't fun to be at war... But still I would want to take a part in this play...
No. Not at all. Since you read the first thread and stated your view. Just wanted to know what your take on that one was. . And good for you. Reading lots of WWII books and all. Thats helps. . And its great of you to think you would want to serve. Shows some responsiblilty and hutzpah . You say you are from Poland. Would you have served in the 1939 army or with the forces serving alongside the British?
That does bring up a question I think. A few have posted that they would serve in the military of the country of their birth. Be it the UK,US,Canada,Russia and others. Now for the others here, what is the draw or motivation for wanting to serve in another country's military? Patriotism for a country not your own? I have seen some that have stated the why for the serving in the German military. But I can't really remember many,or maybe a few, wanting to serve in the Japanese,Italian or with some other country fighting the Western or Eastern Allies. Or what about some of the exile troops fighting to free thier homelands? And some seem to choose the more elite units rather then the regular ones. Does that really matter or would you serve in the standard type of formations? The ones that made up the bulk of the armies.Or wherever you were posted to? Is it the lure of something more adventurous or something else? Reputation? Something your read? I guess the question woulld be "WHY?" would you serve? This thread asks a good question too. http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/10102-would-you-fight-die-your-country-2.html
Blah, blah, blah, uncle Paddy my arze When the Angies and Saxies came over the Britons (I was going to say "you Britons" but changed my mind) just legged it over to Britanny in the first ferry they found, leaving the Germans to lord over it until the French decided to do the same in 1066  (I think I have just started a war...) Resq, I think JCF is not being exactly clear as to what he means to say. For my part I still have to find an unhonourable thing to say about the Polish participation in WW2. Ah, more smoke and mirrors, covered over under a layer of horse... I still have to see a positive contribution to the forum here, but some people are like that.
I think I would serve in Polish army during the war, but as You know we didn't have any chances fighting against Germany and Soviet Union at the same time. Then, if I'd still be alive I would try to escape to UK and there join their army or Polish 'expeditionary' forces, like some soldiers did. Basically I'd wish to serve any forces or divisions that fought against Germans, just not alongside Soviets. But if I'd have a choice, I would want to serve in 101st. I don't think I'd fight because patriotism, more like a moral responsibility. I saw when grown mans cried during interviews, 60 years after the war was over. They still had clear pictures of things that happened there, they still couldn't forget evil things they saw. I'm very thankful they did that for us, so we can live in freedom. If I lived then I would have to help them. But I can't, so I will try to make people I know, remember, cause we cant forget about it, can't ignore it. I know I won't.
To be truthful, I cant say where I would want to serve in WW2 as I probably would have been one of the many young men crying and holding on to their Mother telling her that I dont want to go.
i would fight in the 101st airborne in easy company and kill as many germans as possible and earn as many medals as i could
