Why would you voluntarily chose to serve for a criminal organization?

To the ones who wanted to be in the Waffen-SS they had the best weapons, and were known to be the hardest troops to crack. The SS Honor Guard Battalion that was assigned to hold the ruins of the Reichstag, was one of the most fanaitcal units in he German Army, it took the entirety of the 150th Rifle Division to take, as well as a full day.

As for where I would serve, Five places.
    1. Patton's Third Army, as an tank commander, during the thrust towards Berlin
    2. Part of the 150th Rifle Division during the Battle of the Reichstag
    3. A tank commander in Rommel's Afrikakorps, before Montgomery's Eighth Army arrived in Egypt and started reeling Rommel back.
    4. Of course as a Canuck a member of the 1st Canadian Corps
    5. Lastily I would have to say a member of the British Eighth Army

In 1939 the SS did have a slight edge over its Heer counterparts, but by late 1943 that had almost disappeared. It is incorrect to say they were the best troops and had the best weapons because that was simply not true. Even to say they were elite is sort of misguided. They had a few divisions which might be considered elite (LSSAH, Das Reich, Totenkopf, Wiking) but 4 out of 38 does not make it elite as a whole.

well it wasn't that they were the best overall troops. I would argue that the troops of the Afrika Korps, or the Sixth Army were the most elite troops in the German Army. I twas more like they were some of the best equipped, most of them were given automatic weapons. And Most of the Waffen-SS were fanatics, and generally didn't retreat

As I stated before they were simply not the best equipped. Even before the war, the Heer would take priority over most SS divisions, except the LSSAH, in terms of equipment and weaponry. The Tiger, Panther, and MP 43 were all given to the Heer before the SS.

To say that all Waffen-SS soldiers were fanatics is even more incorrect. The strictness of the selection process for the Waffen-SS had wanned immensely as the war progressed, to the point where it no longer existed. Some soldiers were even forced to join the SS, being transfered out of their other branch of service.

If I remember correctly wasn't it that the SS had to actually fight for upgraded equipment with the Wehrmacht because the Wehrmacht refused to give up any of it the SS, and it even got to the point where Hitler had to issue a direct order to the Wehrmacht to supply the SS with more then the 'bare essential's' and even then they pushed that order to limit and the SS were always short supplied.

Also just to be clear on something, being fanatical doesn't mean you are the 'hardest' or the most elite troops. It simply means you would rather hold to the last compared to a normal unit surrendering under such conditions. Usually meaning you cause more causalities on the enemy due to the limits that they have to go to remove you. It does however not make you elite soldiers, it doesn't make you any better tactically on the field or even better shots, just means you are crazy.

The SS units holding Berlin were simply that, crazy. They wouldn't surrender when they should, they used every and any weapon they could get a hold off, using guerrilla tactics, hit and runs, basically just didn't generally follow the standard tactics that a normal unit under more normal conditions would operate. I have heard of units being equipped with nothing but panzerfausts, how do you take units like that on? Not unlike the Iraqi guerrilla's and there hit and run tactics. Show up cause some casualties then run away, slowing the advance.

But again this doesn't make them elite just desperate.

I recall reading about the artillery peices the the Reichstag were actually carried on the backs of the SS. I think that supports you quite well.

That's an easy choice :) probably a paratrooper in the ETO in the 82nd or maybe the 101st. Not really hot on the prospect of fighting in the battle of the bulge but. Maybe a marine on the pacific, probably with the 1st marine division.

None of that dangerous stuff as a first choice. I'd volunteer to help my hunting camp friend Dr. Jack, God rest his soul, at the close of hostilities in Japan though. He was in charge of inspecting the brothels in Tokyo! And you thought only virtue had its own rewards!;)

Second, on a US Iowa Class BB in the Pacific.

    Regards,
    Dennis

Interesting, but how about inspecting the brothels in, say, Kansas City? That's even less dangerous.

I've got to rate that a toss up! KC steaks and BBQ vs. Japanese seafood and Kobe beef. A fellow has to eat sometime!

I have never heard of that, but with the defense they were putting up with what little they had I would not be surprised.:)
