My name is Wim Kuijpers and my age is 74. I was born and lived the first 25 years in the south of Holland, against the Belgium border, in the village named Borkel en Schaft. The farmer house of my parents was only 5 kilometers away from the place where on sept 17, 1944, operation Market Garden started. So our family was already liberated a few hours later, and even no glass window of our farmer house was damaged. I was at that moment a boy of 9 years old, and on sept 11, 1944, when two Daimler Scout Cars of the 2nd Household Cavalry, led by Lieutenant Rupert Buchanan-Jardine of D Squadron, carried out a daring reconnaissance into Holland to see whether the Dommel Bridge just south of Valkenswaard was intact and would carry the XXX Corps tanks, I was also there at the roadside cafe 'Rustoord', together with a large number of village people. We all thought that war was over for us now, but only a few hours later on that same day the father of my wife Netty was shot by german solders. I am interested in the history of WWII and especially in the first hours of the operation Market Garden and I hope to get in contact with soldiers of both sides. Friendly greetings, wim.
Wim, Thank you for sharing this amazing story... you've definitely come to the right place! Fancy the search feature at the top of your screen. Jem
Hi Wim. Glad to have your aboard. We look forward to more of your recollections. There are plenty of threads dealing with Market Garden, so use the Search function and post often.
Welcome Wim, it is great to have someone like you, who lived during the time join our forum. I can only imagine how exciting it had to have been for a boy your age. I am glad your family's home was not damaged. What is the story of your father-in-law? Was he shot accidentally or because of a reason? Did he survive? Do you remember time before the war?
Wim - Welcome to this fine place and thanks for such an exciting story! I hope you will have more to share with us in the days and weeks to come. Many great things to read and wonderful people to meet here, so jump right into the discussion! Cheers!
