If you had all you need (+ talent ), what kind of a war movie would you make? Are there unsung heroes who definitely deserve a movie made about themselves? Or is there a certain battle, that should be immortalized? If there already is a topic like this... You know, what to do!
Perhaps I'll start... No surprise, that I would like to make a movie about Larry Thorne And the Winter War, of course, is on my list as well. Although, we already have a pretty decent movie about it, Talvisota. Then, the all time #1 sniper Simo Häyhä would get a movie made about himself as well... Honking my own horn...? Probably, but then again, feel free to do so as well!
Andrew, thanks for the postings. Two very interesting people to say the least. I would say that a movie about the Battle of the Samar Sea (Taffy III) would definitely be of great interest to me. Personally, I think the personal stories and character development of the crews (as well as the battle) need to be a major part of this movie. The book, Last Stand of the tin Can Sailors, would be a great place to start. for information on Samar: The Battle Off Samar - Main Menu
Taffy 3 would make a great film. I would like to see a film covering operation Torch from planning to execution. Also a film on John Dolobois who is Luxemburger who returns years later as a U.S. soldier who interrogated high ranking Nazis and then became an ambassador. I would also like to see a movie made about Adolf Galland. I suppose I would always be broke making these epics.
Probably the Home Front of the war - how it was like to be a housewife at the time, what a child being sent from England because of bombing, etc. I think some sort of young character, such as an orphan in a war-torn area like Poland, would be a great character to base a movie on.
I would make a remake of The Battle of the Bulge, come on its in Spain first off! Second the tanks are all modern! M-47s as Tigers and Panzers (barfs) Also I would focus on the stategy too. Serouisly, it needs to be remade, but be GOOD
Tex, that would make a great movie. I really enjoyed the book, and can see a real good action movie, if it's in the right hands.
Would that include Yamato? That would prove interesting to show the vast confusion and panic of the Japanese.
I would like to see a band of brothers type series but based around a unit of the German Army that hated Hitler and the Nazi party and were just trying to finish the war and go home.
Great thread, and great ideas! Maybe we should take some screenwriters classes and submit them ourselves.... I read some really great stories here on the forum that covered some the US POWs and their ordeal on Bataan. Some veterans told their stories of the fight, the surrender, the death march, captivity, the hell ships, surviving sinkings by US submarine and air attacks from US carrier planes. Some made it to the coast of China and eventual freedom, and some were taken to Japan to work in the mines and loading docks. They endured B-29 raids, untold suffering and eventual freedom after the surrender. Those stories would make an excellent mini-series. Too much information to be crammed into a 2 hour movie. And Tomcat, I like your idea as well. Some German units in the Afrika Korps would probably fit your description of units to depict in a movie.
Mine would be about the Australian Coastwatchers who stayed behind Japanese lines in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea to relay vital information to the allies. The closest Hollywood has come is Father Goose staring Cary Grant. These valiant men need more recognition from Hollywood than a comedy (it was a good movie, though).
