Thanks to Miep for helping the frank family during those terrible years she truly was a great person. I hope future generations can learn from her courage efforts. AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – Miep Gies, the office secretary who defied the Nazi occupiers to hide Anne Frank and her family for two years and saved the teenager's diary not, has died, the Anne Frank Museum said Tuesday. After reading the Diary I have to confess that Meip is an incredibly wonderfully and strong person. I think that she is not actually Dutch - but Austrian who when she was only an infant, the Austrians evacuated all the children in some parts of the country because of a massive famine that was happening right after the end of WW1. There were some particularly kind people in the Netherlands who decided to adopted Meip as a baby. So as an infant, Meip was placed on a train and sent to Amsterdam with many other Austrian children. I don't think Meip ever saw her family again... So when the Frank family needed help, Meip did not hesitate to help them. And I have to further confess that I am proud of the Dutch people too.
bbc4 did "anne frank remembered" last night, did anyone see it? I recorded it and will watch this morning. was it newer footage or very much the same!ray..
Sad to hear aunty Miep has passed away ..but ..becoming a 100years is given only to very little people . Dutch people say 'a chair in heaven will be waiting for her'.. Miep was one of he few people that ever got the public's recognition for what she's done .. So many like her remained nameless but paid the price in full for helping others . Let Anne's story be a clear messsage what it really means to be in a country occupied by strangers !! Yes..Holland had a rough ride in those days , but I can't even image how it must have been for the Russians or the Poles who really saw the true face of the occupier. Remember Holland was still seen as Nordic Germanic , but what happened here is not even a fraction of what the eastern peoples had to go through , not just the jewish citizens , all of them . The systematic clearing by both SS and Wehrmacht of villages and even whole cities one after the other ..public killings by the thousands , the absolute horror of daily public hangings of randomly picked out people off the street to put a deep fear in the hearts of people .. it's just a pity there arent any diaries known that became so famous as Anne Franks , maybe us westerners would have had a lot more respect for the eastern peoples too if people only realized what they lived through. If so we never would have known a cold war later on , im shure !! What I really think is questionable is this : Most fierce resistance in the Netherlands against the oppressors were communist groups ....most people tortured and shot for actions against the oppressors were communist fighters and activists ... most hideouts were at communist peoples homes ...(true) And yet not one single momument for those Red resistance fighters exists here in Holland ! Think that whole part is very 'forgotten '...

I apologize I posted this same note in the wrong place it seems. If the mods wish to merge them, or eliminate mine all together that is alright with me. Sorry 'bout that.
Thanks Lou, and I wasn't struck by lightning for my joke. However, my upstairs neighbor did have a fire in his couch last night (dropped cigarette). Don't know if there is a connection?
