"The Bavarian ski resort Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which played a major role in whitewashing Hitler’s persecution of the Jews, is applying to co-host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

"A German government delegation will head to Vancouver next month to set out the joint bid with Munich and a formal submission will be made to the International Olympic Committee in March.

"But if the Germans are to stand a chance, they will have to conduct a serious re-branding of Garmisch, which is still wallowing in its past glories - and the time that Adolf Hitler came to stay."

Ski resort that hosted 1936 Winter Olympics applies to co-host 2018 Games - Times Online

Isn't it time to move on.
While I'm not suggesting that the victims of the Nazi's crimes should be forgotten, I don't see why modern democratic Germany should still be punished for them.

no kidding this is all nonsense. one if you have the chance to visit Garmisch like I have there is no ill feelings within this beautiful village and of course the natural setting that it sits in. It's time to let things lie in the past...........

I don't think it was necessary for the writer to write an essay on how "scum" the history of that place is. Making a simple reference that it once hosted the Olympics, was a Nazi stronghold, etc might have been enough.

I don't think we should have the Olympics in Vancouver because of all of those Chinese immigrants killed building the railroad in BC. We shouldn't have them in Europe either because of all the colonization they did (and the atrocities it brought with it). We shouldn't have had them in China either because of the whole Communism thing, don't they know Communism is so 1980s? Hmm, where on earth can we have the games? I'm sure we can probably find an island or something somewhere to host them...

See what I did there? I'm not saying everything Nazi Germany had done should be forgotten about, but with the logic some people use it can easily be applied to a majority of nations in this world.

I agree, not everything German is 'Nazi'. I visited the place and thought it to be grand. Don't see anything 'Nazi' about it

Spent a great week in G-P a couple of years ago. Wonderful place. Very friendly and great setting. Not far away is the village of Oberammergau, the home of the famous Passion Play. On the churchyard wall is a memorial to victims of the last War. Part of it reads:

We respect and honour all the children who were exterminated because of their unworthy lives.

We respect and honour all people of foreign nations, and of our community who had to suffer bodily torture, fear, abandonment, scorn and betrayal.

    We respect and
honour all families who were threatened by death, were seperated and wounded.

We are looking at you all.

Pfuuh...luckily nobody knows that Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche and BMW are German cars.
Just imagine they would find out that they are driving NAZI cars.

Very well said Mate. Also, I was there in 2000, and that would be a perfect place to host the Winter Olympics ;-)) I was there before the snows fell though it was very cold at the time ;-)) I sure do miss staying at Forsthaus Graseck. Great places nearby such as a trail you can taker that goes down the mountain. I think it takes about 45 minutes to hike down.

It is a great place to visit. I was also in Unterammergau and Oberammergau. The area in my opinion, is absolutely perfect for hosting the Olympics.

I totally agree Carl about the area, did you note in Oberammergau and Unterammergau the Gedank monument(s) ? also the secret little facility up in the northern end of Oberammergau still protected under guard. a spot where the Me 262 was built underground in 45 and there are still some secrets the military does not want the public made known .......... shame on them.

the CC skiing around the Linderhof is a well know feat done by by hundreds every winter, they should allow this for the winter olympics as well. the area is wide open and it's aproximation to the Austrian Alps is ideal plus the tourists if not interested in the games would have loads to do.......

Hi E, I don't remember seeing anything mentioned about those secret facilities. All I really remember was when Susanne and I were driving through a Geniggsjager Base and that I embarassed the hell out of her when I started taking pictures at Platoons fo charging GJs-to which they didnt mind but-she had pie on her face. I even had a few give me a thumbs up as they passed our Audi ;-)) It was nice seeing them led by an officer waving his Pistol in the air-justy like in the movies ;-))

We only saw snow high up but nothing close by though it was cold enough to have it where we were at. Forsthaus Graseck is a greta place to stay in and is located by a trail you can hike dopwn the m,ountain.

I have mixed feelings on this issue of Garmisch being a host of the Olympics. I would guess that nearly 98% of the folks living there were born after 1945. I am sure that it would be perfectly fine for them to be a co-host. However...

Twenty years ago, my Pentagon Technology team visited the then MBB facilities in Munich not too far from Garmisch. Our host suggested a particular Gasthaus (Inn/hotel) SE of Munich which I will not name. The facilities were very bucolic and old. (who doesn't enjoy being awoken by a crowing rooster while a cow pears in your room?)

After dinner one night, I walked around the building's hallways and counted over a dozen "certificates of Appreciation" to the Gasthaus from the local Nazi party dating back to the early 1930s and as late as 1944.

I didnt mention this to our host, but why would the management of the Gasthaus keep those things on public display? It still disturbs me today.

I would have to pull out a map of course of Oberammergau but Carl do you remember the huge pool area up on the hill ? great vantage point of the valley and as you descend the fine road way towards town the area of buildings that I mentioned would be on your left overlooking the small but growing resort town.

funny you never see these buildings mentioned on their web-site nor any map or tourist brochure............wonder why ?
