I have just finished reading a book about the Australian Fighter ace Squadron Leader Nicky Barr, he served for a time in the same POW camp in Italy as a New Zealand Brigadier, George Clifton, DSO, MC. The Brigadier had a penchant for escaping, and after one particulary ambitious failed escape attempt, as the germans were marching the Brigadier and the Squadron Leader away, Nicky Barr turned on the Brigader and yelled...'Bloody hell George, when a man gets to your age and rank, i expect less bloody courage and a bloody site more sense'...to which the Brig. replied, laughing...'I'm going to use that as the preface to my memoirs'.
When asked why he was referred to as 'Ace': Because during World War Two I was responsible for the destruction of six aircraft, fortunately three were enemy. — Captain Ray Lancaster, USAAF
