I have just finished reading a book about the Australian Fighter ace Squadron Leader Nicky Barr, he served for a time in the same POW camp in Italy as a New Zealand Brigadier, George Clifton, DSO, MC. The Brigadier had a penchant for escaping, and after one particulary ambitious failed escape attempt, as the germans were marching the Brigadier and the Squadron Leader away, Nicky Barr turned on the Brigader and yelled...'Bloody hell George, when a man gets to your age and rank, i expect less bloody courage and a bloody site more sense'...to which the Brig. replied, laughing...'I'm going to use that as the preface to my memoirs'. :D

When asked why he was referred to as 'Ace':
Because during World War Two I was responsible for the destruction of six aircraft, fortunately three were enemy.
    — Captain Ray Lancaster, USAAF

In responce to Winston Churchill's 'never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few' speech.

One pilot is said to have remarked:

"Careful Chaps, the PM has seen our mess bill."

"If you are going through hell, keep going" I love that one from Winston Churchill.

" O du dumme, braune Affe
    Wo ist deine neue Waffe?"

    Oh you stupid brown monkey
    Where is your new weapon?

Propaganda posters set around Reich once nothing was seen of the promised new weapons...

    Pilot: Make that a round trip . . .

    Uffz Fritz Marcks

During BoB he was forced to land his crippled Bf 109 E-1 " White 4 " toward a landing at Bexhill. His last radio message and burst of humour was " Spinat vier meldet sich ab nach Kanada!" ( Spinach four reports off for Canada )
