Why were the German's uniform so much nicer than any other countries?

The Waffen SS is part of the SS. It is composed of Allgemeine SS or General SS that carry out state duties and are quazi-military. The RF-SS under Himmler's direct control that operate the entire structure and control the state police functions. The Waffen SS, the combat component of the SS and, the Totenkopfverbände that operate concentration camps and are part of the General SS.

The way your reply was worded to my response implied that you meant specifically the Waffen SS.

I don't mean to be splitting hairs, but I read my response again and all I said was "..the SS wore all black.." If I'd been referring to the Waffen-SS I Would've said "...the SS, Waffen-SS, every single branch of the SS wore all black", which would have been incorrect. I also know the Waffen-SS is the military branch of the SS. I've read and researched a lot of material about this. You also didn't mention the Einsatzgruppen who, as I am sure you know, were death squads or literally "Special Task Force".

Regardless, thanks for the conversation. I love talking about this stuff.

I'll say it...if nobody is brave enough to...

Bike Gangs are ruled by individuals, using the rest of the mob to cover up for the fact that their idea of civilization is to sit on their arses and profit from the drug induced misery of others...

Ordinary society is alien to them because of many things, chiefly that they cannot function within it. Useless people that they are, they expect the rest of us to put up with their crap. They are no better than thugs, and no more useful than an ashtray on a motorcycle.

THERE...I'VE said it. I have only fear to be afraid of

Could it be that the German Army of WWII needed all the morale boosting it could get? What better way to pass along false hopes (called 'blowing smoke up one's a**" here in the States), than to wear a "sharp looking" uniform while trying to understand and follow some of the questionable orders being delivered from Berlin. I have to think that if the United States Marines Corp had marched onto the field of battle in full regalia the War would have ended right then.

I think the conquest of nearly all of Europe probably had their morale high enough, don't you think? I don't think they managed to do that just with fancy uniforms.

Lets keep things in perspective here, people. The German Army was at one point the finest, well-trained, professional army in the world. It was Hitler's megalomania and sheer insanity that led to it's demise. Their bad-arse uniforms and insignia were just icing on the cake. They talked the talk, and walked the walk. That is indisputable.

For any poster that assuredly will bring up something about the holocaust, warcrimes, Nazi worship, etc etc. please save it, I am speaking strictly in a militaristic sense here and nothing more.

Sorry as this will go totally way off topic but, the same man you admit whose megalomania and sheer insanity led to the demise of the German Army was, I believe, the very man who built up the German Army before he destroyed it. ?

There is a saying that I read on some book once or more times-whcih said:

The Germans went into battle as if they were going on Parade.
The British went into battle as if they were going to a Soccer match.
The Americans went into battle looking like they had just come from digging ditches all day ;-)) Or something like that?

I know aren't being entirely serious, but I think you need to be careful with this sort of flippancy. Associating words like 'bad-ass' and 'cool' with the Nazis doesn't sit too well with me...

Carl loved it mate, I think that is so true.

Like the other have said they looked good because they were dress uniforms, yes they looked pretty good, and your point about the Germans being well trained is a very valid fact, however it wasn't because of the uniform or there weapons, or there fancy salute. They were as good as they were becuase they had great NCO's and great officers. The uniform in nothing more then a sense of pride and it is possible to argue that becuase the Germans felt such pride in there nation and there ability to show it off with there uniforms it may have increased morale.

Ahhh c'mon man, read a few of my posts back and it should shine some light in regards to the whole "neo -nazi" thing. Im speaking strictly from a militaristic POV, and nothing more. Please brush any political agendas aside and lets stay on topic here.

I realize the whole Nazi thing is a sensitive subject to some people, but but this is a WW2 discussion forum and the Germany did happen to participate in WW2 and they just happened to be indoctrinated with Nazi ideology. I can't do anything about that and Im sorry if it hurts some peoples feelings. If so you probably shouldn't be participating in this forum.

Maybe "bad-ass" wasn't such a great adjective, but it was really the closest thing I could think of when describing, bcause thats literally the impression I have of 30's-40's Germany. Grandiose structures, intimidating symbols, complete power of the state, strict discipline, overwhelming military might, etc this constitutes "bad ass" to me. Oppressive? yes, but still bad ass lol... :D:D:D

+1 lol glorified janitors, indeed. In The Forgotten Soldier, Sajer is taken prisoner at the end of the book by the "Amis". He comments about the americans "Their jaws moved constantly (chewing gum) , like ruminating animals. their uniforms were made of a different material then ours, and were soft, like golf clothes."

The Germans had the most impressive issue uniforms in WW2 by far, i believe this was no accident. I think this was deliberate and was not done for fashion or some other nonsense but as an important psychological factor, and for morale - good for your side, bad for the enemy's.

The Americans and other allies were different in that soldiers were issued two sets of uniforms, dress and utility. Most other armies including the German and Russian armies, saw no sense in that and simply issued one style of uniform, period. The only differences were epalets of rank, various embellishments for special ceremonies (especially among SS troops), and unit patches. And of course, officers had a different style hat.

The color of the German uniform was greenish grey and stayed that way throughout the war. I have found few photos of regular German troops with helmet covers or camoflage uniforms, but imagery from the war shows these were occasionally issued to SS troops, snipers, and other specialized troops.

And of course the panzer crews all wore black uniforms for the most part. This would have made perfect sense, since these guys must have spent most of their time keeping up their armored vehicles - GREASE!
