Atleast it will show the realities of war far better than BoB. Just from watching the trailers there's been more death and gore compared to the entire season of BoB.
That is a good point. There was some blood and gore but not overly done as in Saving Private Ryan. It was used enough to show the realities of war but not too goorish.
I thought it was also a slow episode but i view it as the calm before the storm in a sense. I was a bit dissapointed with their first battle for how little is shown, but at the same time id imagine it would be hard to expand on it with the night time fighting theres not much to be seen.
Not bad.....I will subscribe to the "slow" theory as well. I am trying not to pick the living sh*t out of it for accuracy: (uniforms, ribbons, weapons etc. etc.) I would have liked to have seen something more about Wake Island and Peking. We shall see what next week offers. Brad
I can't believe I'm missing this! Hopefully I'll be home in time for the UK release (or on R&R which is coming up soon, joy) and I'll be able to let you know then.
I thought it started a bit slow, but also a little faster than BoB's. Remember the first episode of BoB is them in training camp. Nothing but running around and complaining about the CO. One thing I couldn't help but think, and is something as hard as you try, you can never imagine just from reading books. When the Japanese began there attack across the river, I couldn't help but to think, with all the fire coming seemingly straight at you, how does one ever find the courage to fight back. The idea of self preservation is a strong human instinct, and those who overcome that instinct, well, I don't have any words to describe my admiration and respect. As was mentioned above about more of the surface actions in the pacific, I would both like to see it and not see it done. I would love to watch that type of movie as it's my main area of study, but the days where HMS Ajax plays the HMS Ajax are over, and the whole movie would be done in CG. It would make me feel more like I'm watching cartoons than anything.
Anyone know if this will be available to watch online? (Like on Hulu) or will I have to wait for Blu-ray release?
It's not available on hulu. My guess is that it will not be available online until sometime after the series has run. After all, why would they let people watch for free on hulu when they are only showing it on a pay site like HBO? I'm not even sure about that. I just checked hulu for Band of Brothers and it's not available there.
The only problem I have found with it is I find the characters lacking charisma. It seemed like I was drawn to most of the characters on BOB. This is not the case with these guys as I find them very dry or dull. They don't demand my emotional attachment as the men of BOB did. Hopefully at least one of them will grab my attention in the next episode or two.
The series would have to be signed off on to play on Hulu I'm sure. I thought the first ep. was fantastic, and I havce to disagree with you, cbiwv about the charaters being dull...this first one wasn't meant to introduce you to the specific characters like they did in BoB. It was more broad, at least that's how I took it. Looking forward to next week!
I just went to HBO website, registered and was able to watch the entire episode. Weird.I was surprised they didn't charge...
yep just register and you can watch it for free. Kinda wish they didn't do Gaudalcanal, we already have the thin red line. Wish they did tarawa, the philippines, or okinawa, no movies out with that battle yet. HBO: The Pacific: Homepage
Thanks for that Mike. I just watched it at Comcast's website. I was surprised that I could do so. Good advice.
They are doing it in a timeline...they did Guadalcanal because it was important in the aspect as it being the first American offensive. And they are doing Okinawa, but at the end (obviously) And you can't compare The Thin Red line to the Pacific, mostly because Pacific has 10 episodes to tell the story, while the movie had about two hours to try and redo (poorly, IMHO) a tremendous (again, IMHO) book.
