I have spent the last 2 years going over my grandpa's WW2 letters, photos, maps, post cards and his war stories. I thought maybe I would be able to fill in some of the gaps in his story by finding info on the net. Ha, the internet is full of info, just not what I'm looking for. Grandpa served in the 980th FA, service battery. Because this Bn was non-divisional it has been a nightmare trying to track his movements. He gives a pretty good history but after the Bulge, he doesn't have much to say. I'm sure that has to do with the things he saw once inside Germany. So if anyone would like to help me out that would be great.
Hello 980th, Welcome to the forums 980th, looking forward to your postings and good luck on your research. Regards Kruska
hi 980th , Welcome to ww2f ...hope you'll succeed in tracking your dads military carreer ...good luck
Welcome 980th, Post as much info as you can in the 'research' thread and I'm sure you'll get plenty of help. There are many knowledgeable folks here.
Thanks for the welcome. Today I started writing grandpa's story in the research area. I'm posting photos as I go. I teach in our Jr. High computer lab, so I am able to get a lot done. Who ever said people use their work computers for personal use, doesn't know what they are talking about!
Hi 980th . I'm glad to read you are accepting to share your dad's story with us in the research section, I hope people will help you in return
Hi 980th, My Great Uncle was in the 144th Field Artillery Battery A. From what I do know he was in charge of one of the Long Tom's. I was named after him ( my middle name is his first name). His name was Larkin V. Thornburgh. He passed on 22 years ago. He was very much a part of my life growing up but never knew much of his war history because he never talked about it. I have a some pictures and other papers I want to post here when I can. I read your grandfathers stories of the war and just kept thinking of my uncle knowing they were most likely in the same places at the same time. I agree it has been very tough finding any information about them and there movements. I have some reference of my uncle being near Kirsch France and receiving the Bronze star for his actions when the unit came under aerial attack. It does not give a time for when this happened. I am still researching. Like I said once I get everything scanned I will put everything I have in the research section. Thanks again it was really fun to read your research. -Bill
