Up to 25,000 people were killed in the Allied bombing of Dresden during World War 2 an official commission stated. After 5 years of research, the Dresden Historians' Commission published its final report on the firestorm unleashed by British and American bombers February 13-15, 1945, only 3 months before the end of the war. The study is meant to settle a debate that has continued for decades, with far-right groups claiming that 500,000 people were killed in the "criminal" air assault on the Baroque city known as "Florence on the Elbe." Conservative estimates had put the number of deaths at 20,000.

Still leaves us to wonder how many were permanently injured however, still nice to see that the question has been settled for good.

I dare say that someone, somewhere, will dispute the findings.

Settle this debate? You may as well settle the Bismarck debate too then. This figures will always be disputed although all serious historians do not go beyond the 20.000/30.000 figure nowadays.

Well, this should be the "golden standard" now. I don´t think anyone can do better research but like mentioned someone always disagrees. Like we know some people deny the holocaust and there was quite a bit of evidence of that.

I doubt this figures are any more accurate then they were 5 years ago, it is simply to long ago to be a definite answer to the civilian loses.

What really annoys me is that people talk about this being a criminal act by the British, yet compare to not what the SS or the Nazi's did but simply to what the Luftwaffe did alone, and how many cities they firebombed into dust, rubble or even submission and how many civilian casualties they caused.

But I suppose two wrongs do not make a right.

I doubt too, because city was filled with refugees. Who know hove many they where there, and have many have been killed.

Luftwaffe was just an amateurs compeering with RAF and American Air Force in destruction of cities.

So Warsaw, Rotterdam and Coventry were bombed by schoolboys? The only reason why the Lw didn't bomb more is because they were prevented to do so.

Maybe, but in any case it didn't absolve American and British air force in mass killing of civilians.

that's called total war and it was not started by the allies. It was the quickest way to stop the massive murder of many more inncoent civilans by the Nazis in the camps or in occupied territories. There is no gentle war, things had to be done. This discussion has already been made before on this forum, you may find some of them in the search section by typing "dresden" for instance. There is no need to start the discussion again here, not only because it has been debated, but it is also a matter of respect for the veterans who fought those battles. Thank you for your understanding.

Bombardments where infective, GNP of Germany continue to rise until 1944. Quickest way to stop the massive murder is mass murder? Interesting...
There are much discussions of nazi war crimes in now days too. Why crimes of others must be taboo?
