Again so as not to clutter up a thread with minutia and keep the conversation focused. There has been a good amout of discussion / debate regarding how the Marine Corps has changed since WW2. When I watch the Pacific and it's predecessor "Generation Kill" I can tell that consideration has been made to capture the essence of what it means to be a Marine; more specifically, what it means to be a Marine Infantryman-Mud Marine-Grunt. Here is a link to a site owned by a Lance Corporal currently on active duty in Hawaii. HE has done two tours of duty as an 0351 Anti Tank Assaultman. I will caution you that it contains barracks humor in the strictest sense and by default speaks to all current and former Marines: Terminal Lance - You can't spell "Disgruntled" without "Grunt". You will see a common thread running through the attitudes portrayed both in the mini series' and the current generation.
Great link. I can remember how I felt as a LCpl., this dude nails it. It's also amazing how quickly your perception/attitude changes once you pick up Cpl. Hell, I liked the little comments he posted just as much as the cartoons. Forwarded the link to both sons, they'll get a kick out of it, especially the younger since he's still in LCpl hell.
You might remeber this Marine from the first Episode, he's Sid Phillips. On the link there is an interview with him regarding Bob "Lucky" Leckie. There is also an option to read about Sid from Boot Camp to the end of his service. MarineSidPhillips.com: Sid Phillips remembers fellow H-Company Marine Robert Leckie
Oh Excellent!! Sid is going to be at the WWII Weekend & Airshow at Reading, PA, an event I attend every June. Thanks for posting! Greg C.
