All, Does anyone know of a good web-link that discusses the Battle of Kholm? This is the pocket in Northern Russia that convinced the German Leaders that re-supply by air was a viable option later during the fighting on the Eastern Front. I have a book called "Siege" by Russ Schnieder that is a fictional story based on facts. I am looking for the really truth to this battle. Thanks for listening.
I don't know of any weblinks but there is a book by Oskars Perro called Fortress Cholm which was published in 1992. Not cheap but there are copies available via abebooks. I don't have this book, nor have I read it so I can't give a thumbs up or down I'm afraid.
The novel is a very good read. Will make you feel the cold of winter and feel the heat of the mid-summer Russian sun.
Walking the Battlefields: Battle Group Scherer - 105 days in Cholm, Russia (1942) The siege of Kholm 1942 Also some good info and stats in Siege! by Patrick McTaggart " The strategic importance of Kholm lay in its location. Situated on the only firm ground in an enormous area of swamp and marshland, the town was a transportation hub on which seven main roads converged. Any army, German or Soviet, would need to control Kholm in order to carry out offensive operations in the area."
