This is a great tragedy for Poland. He died while travelling to the Katyn memorial. While Putin said that Katyn was horrible crime, Russia has never officially apologized it. Hope that at least now they will do it. Katyn seems to haunt Poland even today, one way or another...

    This is terrible news.

The Russian Prime Minister (Vlad Putin) will be taking charge PERSONALLY of this investigation.

Sure do hope that this was an accident.

If a terrorist(s) may have been involved, we may have a crisis of World involvement.

Although it was tempting to immediately consider conspiracy theories/terrorism etc, it would appear from today's reports that the basis of the accident was the same as that which killed motor racing champion Graham Hill in 1975 : trying to 'have a go' at landing in conditions of poor visibility when a diversion would have been prudent - but very inconvenient.

The black boxes have been recovered which will in due course reveal much of the story, but it is a terrible tragedy for Poland.

God Bless all those that died in the accident and condolences to their families...

The plane was old TU-154 and Polish president has two of them. Both of these planes have had several technical problems and Polish presidential office has required new planes. This request has been denied or postponed by the Polish government. For example russian airline Aeroflot has taken all the planes of this type (TU-154) off the air, apparently it being far too unreliable.

However, this accident wasn't caused by any technical problem in the plane. This is now officially confirmed by the director of the accident research group Alexander Bastrykin. Black boxes was found instantly after the crash.

Apparently the plane was coming far too low and it hit the trees and its tale ripped off the plane.

One thing that I can't understand is that why the hell all the Polish "elite" was in the same plane.

Here's an interesting analysis of the whole tragedy. What a rotten turn of events so soon after the first Soviet attempt to show some remorse.

He died en route to the most sensitive mission possible - a visit to the place that has driven a wedge between Poles and Russians for three generations. The death of Lech Kaczynski, Poland's president and dozens of his high-level countrymen in a plane crash, and the purpose behind the journey, laid bare the deep divisions that remain between two nations still struggling to be more than uneasy neighbors who watch each other with skepticism and suspicion.

it is very strange to place all these people in one plane, it is the routine here to travel with several planes, apperentlly not in Poland. However, that will change now, I guess.
