Revealed: How 'neutral' Sweden made secret loans to Nazi Germany during WWII.

New documents show how the Swedish finance minister in wartime, Ernst Wigforss, approved bank credits to Berlin in 1941. The details were recently uncovered in a filing cabinet at the finance ministry.
The loans served to increase Swedish exports to Nazi Germany, allowing it to prosecute its war on all fronts.

Not actually surprising. Once you know the material Sweden was selling to Germans this was quite expectable. Then again you must consider the military threat the Germans were to Sweden and probably some policy like this can make them more valuable to Germany than being occupied.

 

You can't really blame the Swedes for trading with the Germans . Or else you would have to blame half of the world . Hitler even got loans from German Jews. The last Russian train with sold wheat crossed the German border three hours before Barbarossa only. The U.S. sold petrol to the Germans until late 1941, the Swiss recycled their gold, the French made vehicles for the Germran front and the first version of the BF109 were equipped with Rolls Royce engines.

 

There is one major reason why Sweden was not invaded like Denmark and Norway; the germans considered Sweden to be so Nazi friendly that an occupation was not neccessary. During the battle of Narvik the swedes made preparations to allow the retreating german forces to cross the Swedish border to escape the Allied. This attitude didn't change until the germans lost at Stalingrad, then the swedes realized they were betting on the wrong horse....

 

People seem to forget Sweden would be feeding both sides with two hands and not just one. Give the Germans guns, tell the British where they are!

 

A neutral country can do business with whomever they wish. We certainly were doing plenty of business with Britain before we officially entered the war, and sold aircraft to Finland, among others.

 

And sold scrap metal and oil to Japan....

It depends on how you define neutrality. The moment FDR decided to
'lend his neighbor a garden hose to help him put out the fire', the US was no longer neutral, and that was long before Pearl Harbor.

Sweden allowed the germans to use their railroad system to transport men and equipment between Southern Norway and Northern Norway/Finland from day one after the invasion of Norway and Denmark. Well known is the transport of the entire 163. Infanterie Division Engelbrecht including its equipment from Oslo through Sweden to the Northern Front on June 25th 1941, a few days after the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
Perhaps less known is the fact that Sweden also opened its airspace for Luftwaffe air transport between the Eastern Front and Norway.

And now we are no longer talking about business, this is actively helping one side in his war effort.

 

I read a book years ago, 'Trading with the Enemy' which documented American companies doing business with the Germans DURING the war. For some reason, they were exempted from the Trading with the Enemy Act.

 

This is correct Mr Petersen, I believe the book was written by Charles Higham.

Considering the position of neutral countries like Switzerland and Sweden. I also read that Franco got money from Churchill to be neutral, while also the nazis financed him...

 

sure, but is it right???.....so, after the Holocaust is a known fact/hitler illegally invades country after country, it is right for a neutral country to help them?
