Here's a brief start: 1) "Flame and Citron" What a film! I did not know too much about the Danish resistance before seeing it. It claims to be based pretty solidly on fact but whatever its accuracy it is an exciting and thought-provoking film about two resistance men whose joib is to assassinate Danish Nazis. Plenty of action but plenty of questions about morality and betrayal too. Here's the trailer: YouTube - Flame & Citron - Official UK Trailer (OUT NOW ON DVD) 2) "The Train" Brilliant cinematography and stunts. Lancaster at his best and most physical. 3) "Secret Army" (BBC TV) A brilliant portrayal of the Comete evasion line in Belgium. 4) "The Silver Fleet" Ralph Richardson inspires the Dutch resistance.
Paris Brûle t'il ? =is Paris Burning ? is one of my favorites the red hair girl (Dutch Resistance) Le mur de L'atlantique Operation Valkeryie
Edge of Darkness-starring Erroll Flynn. The Commandos Strike At Dawn w/ Paul Muni. The North Star w/ Gregory Peck. Forgot to mention theat fairly new movie w/ Daniel Craig: Defiance.
Thanks for the suggestions. Is Paris Burning? is a film I've never seen. I must check it out. Also, Le Silence de la Mer is a fascinating film about resistance in its broadest sense. A Wehrmacht officer is billeted with a father and daughter in this small house and they decide not to talk to him. It's a great film. Le silence de la Mer (1949)
Just a few that I can add to what has already been suggested; The Black Book - The Dutch Resistance A Bridge Too Far - some more Dutch Resistance, mixed in with the storyline
a must see: this is about the Lyon Gestapo Lucie Aubrac is a 1997 French biopic of the World War II French Resistance member Lucie Aubrac. The film starred Carole Bouquet in the title role. The film was released in the UK on 23 January 1998 and was directed by Claude Berri (an Oscar winner). The story loosely follows the role of Lucie Aubrac and her husband during the Second World War and their parts in the resistance in Lyon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucie_Aubrac_(film)
Would "The Train" with Burt Lancaster be considered a resistance type of movie? It's been 25+ years since I've seen it and can't remember much except the tops of the train being marked to avoid allied bombers and Papa Boule doing his best to foil the Germans ("five francs is five francs").
That's one I have to see. It portrays Jean Moulin's arrest, doesn't it? He was codenamed Max. The Jean Moulin museum in Paris is a must for anyone interested in the Resistance.
I recently saw Female Agents (dumb title the original French Les femmes de l'ombre is much better) which despite its high powered cast was a bit dull as was Charlotte Grey. The Louis Malle made two classic Occupation movies - Au revoir les enfants and Lacombe Lucien.
Lacombe Lucien is excellent. It's been a while since I've seen it. I haven't seen Female Agents - the DVD cover made it look like Charlie's Angels: The SOE Years. Watched Army of Crime last week - thought it was excellent. Recommended.
While not strictly about the resistance, the story of the resistance efforts in "The Longest Day," was pretty good.
I just remembered another one. "When Willy Comes Marching Home" with Dan Dailey and William Demerest Jr. It's a comedy, but it shows some interaction with the French underground collecting information about V-1s and getting it to the allies. Good flick.
Edge of Darkness w/ Errol Flynn. Its about the Norwegian Resistance. Also, The Heroes of Telemark-w/ Kirk Douglas and Sir Richard Harris-another Norwegian Resistance movie.
And Irina Demich made a not altogether disappointing member of the Maquis! http://www.skylighters.org/amanoutoftime/bikerchicksid1.jpg
