I only caught the last 5 minutes (busy at work today) and though Villa should have done better in the box with that sharp turn - was fully expecting the lob to go in at first.

now 1-0 to the swiss.. oh dear...are swiss to break an 18 game losing run! v spain!!!!

spain bombing the swiss now.. some nail biting finish, I think..

almost 2-0.. lucky upright.. exciting game though..

I slapped myself and wondered why I had the Swiss grinding out a win on my bracket. Now I'm glad I did. Group H just got very interesting.

In spite of all the "whoopla" about the games, who's winning, who's getting "surprised", which match-ups are looking the most important. There is this darker side as well. Sometimes the word fan reflects its root word too well; "fanatic".

There are two World Cup stories today which are rather appalling, for completely different reasons, the first is about total devotion to the game at the expense of this couple’s children.

    Goto:

Children DIE While Parents Watch World Cup

And the second is about the virulent and deadly dislike of all things non-fundimental Islamic (somehow this qualified), and the killing of people who ARE watching the games.

    Goto:

Somali Soccer Fans Executed By Islamic Militants For Watching World Cup Match

Spain was one of my favorites, but now that they lost against the Swiss I'll focuss my bets on the Dutch instead.

I wouldn't count Spain out. Switzerland has not given up a WC goal since 1994. I still see Spain making it into the 2nd round.

As sad as both of those incidents undoubtedly are, neither actually have anything to do with football.

Saw an interesting movie about soccer gangs right before the world cup opener. Green Street Hooligans recommend it to anyone who likes soccer and a bit of fighting. :D

Heh, funny thing about that movie is Frodo, I mean Elijah Woods, is the main character in it. Not exactly the first person I think of when I think Hooligan. Good movie though not entirely true to life.

Typical? LMAO, you can't be serious. Erm, hello Euro-Cup winners? They completely dominated the game, and were unlucky to hit the crossbar while I was watching.

I must ask, wtf happened to Torres and his hair? He looks like Gerrard now.

dang I will get chastised I know but must say so far very boring football playing .......

again the youth of the German team was consistant playing at Aussies weakness, probing and denying the ball, will they manage this against a more solidified and determined team............. hard to say

If there are so many games ending in ties, how does the champion get determined? Coin flip?

It is a lot more fun to play than to watch...unless the teams you are watching are made up of 6 years olds. Now that is entertainment!
RTR I only have about 2 1/2 months of gloating left.

You'll get no arguement from me.

We were given a choice, pads or death. We chose pads.
that pretty much sums up every rugby match I have ever seen. But, it was interesting to watch.

I just shake my head and move on...

I think the only thing worse than watching kickball is reading about it. I agree with Jeff in that Little League Baseball is the purist form of sports entertainment; it often doesn't work out well for the butterflies though.

This thread is about the World Cup - if all you guys want to do is slag off something you have no interest in why don't you go and create another thread so the rest of us can actually discuss it without having to sift through the rubbish. Thanks.
