This album was developed with a purpose to familiarize staff of the Land forces with types and designs of field fortifications, which were used by the German defense. This album is based on the Reports of Fronts Engineering Departments and various commissions, created under Chief of Military Engineering. The album contains 7 sections: I. Opened Fire Positions. II. Covered Fire Positions. III. Observation Posts. IV. Shelters. V. Preparing Local Environment for Defense. VI. Anti-tank and Anti-personnel Obstacles. VII. Camouflage. German Field Fortifications on the Eastern Front http://www.allworldwars.com/IL-2-Illustrated-Flight-Manual.html just one of the very good links from site..
Hi Sniper, i like them because i´ve learned how to make such obstacles with or without explosives for fighting in woodlands. There is nothing new on it today, except using sensors. Regards Ulrich
The Germans planned mid-war to build a defensive line in the east. Some preparations were made and Hitler promised this line would be built, but it never was. The Atlantic wall took almost every resource the Germans had and by the time they desperately needed it in the east, not much was available for building any defensive line. In any case the Eastern front was so vast and Russian resources so great, that the Germans could have built the Great Wall of China from Leningrad to the Black Sea for all it mattered. The Russians would still have breached any defensive line no matter what it cost them.
Hi marc, the problem with the defense lines are, that they were good against poor armed knights in the 12th century but useless in modern wars like WWII and later. They cost a lot of resources and money only to be good as a huge mountain of outbombed concret and steel. But this is what you stated too. Building tanks and guns out of this steel would have been a better choice. Regards Ulrich
