Would anyone be able to advise whether there is such an animal as a 1/48 P-51 B kit WITH the tail fillet and a P-51D WITHOUT the fillet?

These are for fifteenth Air Force P-51s and there seems to be quite a few permutations.

    Thanks,

    Michael

Some very early production D's did not have the fillet. So possibly some of these wound up in the 15th.

I've never seen a photo of a B or C with a fillet, unless it was a test bird.

Do you have any photos showing any of this? Model makers DO get it wrong sometimes, especially when they're trying to economize, using the molds from one variant to create a kit for another variant.

The P-51B/C dorsal fin fillet was a late field retrofit to strengthen the tail and increase stability. The fillet is smaller than what was used on the "D". An example below:

    Gromit801 and mcoffee,

Thank you for the help. I think I will just proceed with the Kits I have and go along with what is available. There is a similar photo to the one Gromit801 posted on page 29 of the Osprey 'Mustang Aces of the Ninth and Fifteenth ...' by Jerry Scutts, this one being an F-6B.
