Hi all - New to this site so forgive me if I ask what might seem straight forward to everyone else!
Now I'm trying to assist my mum in obtaining her fathers medals from WW2. He served for the period of the war, but his brother was killed and by the end of the war he refused to collect his medals. I have my medals, 2 great grandfathers and grandad's brothers. So it would make a nice military family tree.

I know to obtain them my mum would need no. rank name. But we have no idea what his army number was. My mum has a rough idea where he served (I will speak to her to get all she knows) e.g. he was in the Royal Artillery, a Major and spend the vast majority of his time in Scotland (Poss Edinburgh) teaching new recruits. then went to India for a short period after the war.
Obviously she knows his DOB, regt, possible period of service. but how to find out more, she's not even sure of which RA unti he was in.
We have ALL of his brothers details, becuase they were on the slip then sent my mum's grandmother after he went missing at sea, presumed shot down.

Can anyone shed some light on the minimum information needed and then were I can start?

All help is a big thanks!:rolleyes:

You may want to post this inquiry on the sister site World War 2 Talk. it's more oriented towards the British side of the war. They may be able to better answer your question.

World War 2 Talk - Powered by vBulletin

After I read your question I went to WW2Talk and looked up replacement medals it seems allot harder to get UK medals replaced. Here in the US every service member is entitled to 1 free no questions asked replacement set. However from what I read in the UK they only replace them if they were never issued, lost or damaged, And you have to have a police report number to prove they were stolen. But You shouldn't have much trouble getting them cause they were never issued, And your mother can sign the request as next of kin.

    Welcome and Best of luck!
