    Hello everyone,

    I just bought this Panzer Assault Badge in Silver yesterday for $70 at a gun show from a guy who had a lot of stuff that looked original, HJ and party flags, various medals, and a lot more. I was wondering if this looks original or if I paid a good price for it.

    Pretty sure it's too thin to be real. The real ones are smooth on the back, slightly curved with no detail showing through. Also the edges of yours appear a little rough, the track detail is too crisp and the gun a bit too droopy. Sorry. I hope someone will contradict me. :(

    both of which consensus has as real;

    The fakes that own up to it go for $15-$20 on average

    Ok there were some originals made by stamping, i discover; here described in some detail, a little before half way down;

    German Militaria Blog

    I still don't like the finish of yours, although the clasp pin looks good. Needs a second or third opinion, but I still go with repro, sorry.

    Also this firm was the only stamped style manufacturer;

    "1) F.W. Assmann &Sohne of Ludenscheid….. The Assmann Firm, a prolific maker of badges for the Third Reich, is known for their die stamped version of the PAB. Made out of brass sheet and hallmarked with their company logo on the back side of the badge."

    The logo should be above the roadwheels on the back right

    http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/war_badges/heer/panzer_badge_files/PAB/makers.htm

    You could see if it is magnetic (making sure not to get a false positive from the clasp) - brass sheet shouldn't be magnetic, tinned steel plate will be.

    The only thing that is barely magnetic is the clasp, and I don't see any maker marks

    Inconclusive either way then - one of those two sites says some unmarked stamped ones were made, the other says all were marked. Have to wait and see what other people think in the morning. If it does turn out to be real at least it is one of the rarer types made :)

    What I'm wondering is how would it be marked anyway? It looks like it would be impossible to mark without engraving it in the front. Thanks for your help so far.

    here's one very similar to yours, unmarked stamped type - no way for me to be sure if it is real, but i get a better feeling off it, and price is much higher than you paid;

    maybe you see differences? I think the wheels are different on the back.

    This one is 100% reproduction. Look at all of the left over material that was left behind after this one was made...I bet you can bend it with one hand...soft, soft and softer.

    There is some great information available for free on the web...you just have to spend the time looking for it and remembering what you read. For $70.00 you could have had a great reference book and bought an example knowing what you were buying.

    Don't feel too bad...we all make mistakes...just don't repeat it...if you try buying blind again you will surely get what you ask for. I too bought a fake very close to this way back when...I put it into a press and crushed it...it was so soft it didn't take much pressure either!

    Just a quick reminder also...the dealer may not even know what he is selling...that is why it is so important to know what you are doing before you start spending your hard-earned money.

    Almost everything on that guys page is bogus...do yourself a favor guys and stay away from places like this...atleast until you are 100% sure of what you are doing.

    Well, thanks anyway, both of you. I'll be a lot more cautious next time I buy an original award(if I ever do).

    ....one thing I've learned from RRCollector is that the area of Third Reich insignia/awards is an absolute minefield.:(

    One thing to remember is they DID make srtamped PABs. So dont just toss yours away till your absolutely surte. I bought a Silver IAB stamped, from a wellknown and well-liked west coast collector-mines real and no-I dont have pics of mine so i can post any of it-and no way to post either.
