I seem to remember that i heard that the bolt of a K98k cannot be cycled empty because a cut off plate prevented the bolt from closing, i heard this so long ago im not sure its true. So can you cycle the bolt with no rounds in the magazine?
AFAIK it can be cycled empty - there is only a straightforward magazine follower plate which does not foul the bolt when the magazine is empty. ( I just checked my own to make sure....)
I think i was watching a video and a guy was showing his K98k, and he didnt cycle the bolt fully because he said something about the magazine plate stops it from closing. Thanks guys
Just to double-check, I've referred to my weapons 'Bible', WHB Smith's 1945 'Small Arms Of The World'. We were correct, there is no cut-off for the K98k. Compare with what is said for the M1 Garand ; - 'Empty cartridge cases are ejected on the right upwards and to the front. When the rifle is empty, bolt will stay open. This serves notice that the weapon is empty and permits immediate insertion of a fully loaded clip, so that firing may be speedily resumed'.
That's a useful video. Yes, when the bolt is removed, the magazine follower rides up further, which it doesn't do after the final round is ejected.
