    Joseph F. Shedivy

    January 11, 2011

Joseph F. Shedivy, age 85, a lifelong resident of Two Rivers, died on Friday evening Jan. 7, 2011, at Manitowoc Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Joe was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Two Rivers, son of the late Joseph Shedivy, Sr. and Agnes (Moseler) Shedivy. Joe was a WWII disabled veteran. While home on furlough, Joe paid a visit to his old employer, The Metal Ware Shop. There, on the machine that he used to operate, he found Ellie Graves working. It was love at first sight. After being severely wounded for the third time during the battle of the bulge, a long recovery and rehab, he was discharged as a one hundred percent disabled veteran on Aug. 14, 1945. During his service he received three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for Valor, along with numerous campaign ribbons and awards. After returning from the war, he married Ellie on Jan. 11, 1947.

Joe was an active member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was named the Disabled Veteran of the Year for the State of Wisconsin in June of 1969. Joe was able to rehabilitate himself so that he was employed as a Chevy auto mechanic for nine years before becoming a postal carrier for the remainder of his career, retiring in 1982. He was also very active in local government. Joe was a long time fixture of the Two Rivers city council. He also held the position of the President of that council for a number of years.
Joe was an avid Packers fan. He also loved taking his beagles rabbit hunting with his dad and son. He really enjoyed the children on his postal route and they loved him. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Of the many things that Joe will be remembered for is the fact that he was a part of the group of boys that discovered the stash of snow buried in the sand one summer. That was the origin of the now annual Two Rivers Snow Festival.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years: Eleanor "Ellie" Graves Shedivy, Two Rivers; one daughter: Paulette "Penny" Hollatz, Marshfield; one son and daughter-in-law: Michael and Annie Shedivy, Mariposa, Calif.; six grandchildren: Jill (Todd) Schillinger, Stratford, Kurt (Beth) Hollatz, Marshfield, Gina Hollatz, Stratford, Dana (Travis) Staroba, Madison, Shawn Shedivy, Arix., Joey Shedivy, Minn.; six great-grandchildren: Savannah Schillinger, Tanaya Schillinger, Bailey-Ann Hollatz, Halle Hollatz, Carter Hollatz and Heaven Li Shedivy; and one sister-in-law: Violet Shedivy, Two Rivers. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Shedivy.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dick Mauthe with burial to take place at Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers, where he will have a view of his and Eleanor's long time residence on 41st St. Full military honors will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion Posts of Two Rivers.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joseph's name to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Association.
The Klein & Stangel Funeral Home, Two Rivers, is assisting the Shedivy family with arrangements.
Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a kind, loyal and extremely ethical man. His family and friends will surely miss him.

Thanks Ray, it is sad that too many of my Generation and my Daughter's are ignorant of what the Greatest Generation did, and why we have our freedom today because of it.

I think your probably right shawn, possibly not understanding why so many gave so much to achieve the freedom e see today, and what most took for granted.

To the family of Joseph Shedivy, the family of Daniel and Evelyn Baugniet (all former residents of Two Rivers) wish to express their deepest sympathy to his wife Eleanor, daughter Paulette, son Michael, and their families, for the loss of their husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. As close neighbors and friends from the time the Shedivy family moved to their new home on Mishicot Rd. in 1956, we will always remember Joe's easy laugh and friendly manner.
We are sorry for your loss.

Gail, Thank you so much for the kind words. I cannot tell you how many found memories I have of that house and Two Rivers as a whole. Grandpa was one of the strongest and most proud people I have ever known. Not Pride in himself or his accomplishments (which could fill a book) but in his Family, in Two Rivers and Most of all, His Country.

At work with me now are his City Council President Name Plate on my desk and on my work lanyard is one of his City Council Reelection Campaign Buttons, and a lapel pin I found of his representing one of his 3 Purple Hearts.

Again, I cannot tell you how much it means to us all. If you get the time, please visit her at Wisteria Haus. With Penny and her family 3+ hours west, My Father in CA and Myself in AZ she can really use some visitors.

    Thank you so much.

Sorry for the long delay in reply, I just came across it.

Thank you so much for your words, it means a lot to hear them from someone that lives where he performed his duty to save us all from that scourge. I one day would like to visit that area myself.
