Nazis may have been cruel but they were snappy dressers. I was wondering if I could use a German SS helmet reproduction to skateboard with. Sounds funny I know but I was wondering if it was safe. Thanks in advance! :D

First I would not use an ss one. Second, I have seen german looking motorcycle helmets, maybe you could use that. As far as safety, skateboarding helmets are light and have a lot of padding. The helmet would be heavy and have little padding. I wouldn't use it.

Thanks.... I've been told they weren't made for the same impact so it wouldn't work well, I just wanted to be sure and check here. What do you mean you wouldn't use the SS 1? Are versions made lighter or with better protection? Thanks for the quick reply and helpful info.

Most people in general wouldnt be 'big' fans of the SS. WW2 military helmets were'nt neccessarily designed with skateboarding in mind.....so it's probualy best (and more practical/safer) to use a skateboarding helmet.....you can still decorate it as you please.

SS is the worst idea. You would probably tick somebody off with one.

All right all right, I'm sorry. You just sounded as if you were being a troll and answering purely upon opinion, thank you for the info though on your second post. What do you mean they aren't fans? Like they'll see me and be like "look at dat Nazi kid" :D

Certainly not the best way to respond to a long time member of the forum. We are devoted to the study of WW2, not answering questions about your skateboarding attire. If you wish to stay around, watch what you post.

I'm not "AndyP", but yes that helmet would be an "affection" rather than a protective device for skateboarding. They were borderline for combat in construction (design was fine), without liners and without any skull protection from blunt impact trauma. Hit a guy wearing a "Stalhelm" with a baseball bat on the side under the crown, and he might be down and out. They just don't distribute the impact well enough.

Why wear one if they do nothing except add weight above your shoulders and disrupt your center of gravity? A "Stalhelm" is nothing but a symbol today, and only used in the civilian area to make a statement of personal opinion and (perhaps) admiration.

The form which is copied in our new American Kevlar units isn't because we "adore" the German design, but because "form follows function", and they happened to discover a very efficient functional shape which covers a larger portion of the human head/neck from shrapnel and stuff, very early on.

Sorry I am cluttering up your forums with my unworthy questions. I have apologized to AndyPants and I am sincere, I mistook his post for cutting words and do wish to make it up to him.

That's alright SX Fighter, ......I was answering purely upon opinion, as it sounds like a bad idea to me. Im not going to give you a history lesson on the SS, read a book or google them/what they did etc .....you'll find some good information on this site .....also "look at dat Nazi kid" is'nt cool.

    Thanks Lou!
