    Still the Fairey Battle with the Lysansder and Hudson coming in close, oh and the Sunderland flying mansion house come castle seaplane.

    OK and the corsair, how many can we have....And can we just reiterate our favourite tanks again...Ill go with the Char B, just to show my favourite aircraft is in sync with my favourite tank masters of the sky and masters of the corn fields..errr suns got to me then.

    My personal fav is one that "might have been." That being the P-72. The two prototypes manufactured by Republic flew right after D-day and, the aircraft could have been in full production a few months later as most of it was common with its predecessor, the P-47.
    Here was an aircraft with a potential top speed in the production model of 520+ mph, a mile-a-minute climb rate and, the maneuverability and firepower of a P-47. As an interceptor or, V-1 chase plane it would have been absolutely phenominal. Short of the late war jets, which are in another class entirely, it was one hot aircraft.

    The Arado 234 B-1 Reconnaisance plane.

    Reconnaisance rarely gets any real fame, but this was a truly beautiful plane. Much more suited to its role than the B-2, light bomber version of the same aircraft, this Recce aircraft was first used over the Normany beachhead and provided the German High Command with better and more accurate intelligence than all overflights in the previous 2 months.

    Not a single 234 B-1 was ever shot down by enemy fighters, and it is likely that the remarkable information provided by this aircraft over the last years of the war helped the Germans delay the end of the war by months.

    Also, it is just a beautiful looking aircraft.

    I fell in love with it when I saw an old B&W film taken from a B-17 of a A234 B-1 flying past it at a distance, ignoring atempts to intercept or impede it at all, sleek and fast beyond anything else in the war.

    Notably, the upgraded version of the A 234, the Four engine C model, was the fastest aircraft of the second world war, and was actually an excellent light bomber with reasonable load capacity. However, like so many other things, only about 14 of the C model were produced before the factory was overrun by the Soviets.

    P-38, A very unique aircraft ,for it's shape.Good speed and lots of fire power.Also the highest U.S. scoring ace flew a P-38. I don't think the P-38 gets a lot of attention and respect it should, but maybe thats just me?

    Just gotta wake this topic up!

    I tend to march to the beat of a different drummer, but I have to say "Mitsubishi A6M Zero" when it comes to naming my favorite. It was, after all, the first carrier-based fighter ever that could easily best land-based opponents. And I love its sleek good looks, too.

    What's wrong with it, Fenrir? Much as I like the Mustang, the Zero's always been my true favorite WWII aircraft.

    There are so many to choose from. But I would have to say that my favorite bombers were the B-17 and the Lancaster. My favorite fighters are the Spitfire and The Corsair.

    Ok, this is a little story I recently came across when reading up on the German assault on Festung ( ;) ) Holland, May 1940.

    Two officers were stationed at the Grebbeberg, the main Ducth line of defense, when they were subject of an Stuka attack. Both men took cover and had the might of these planes unleashed almost on top of them.

    When the attack was over, one officer looked into the pale face of the other and said: "Well, yes, that does work laxativying"

    (forgive me my spelling...Gordon)...

    Mine is still the mossie...because it is such a beautiful plane...

    For the RAF it has to be the Mossie XXX nf.

    for the US the P-51D

    for Germany.............too many, the heavy Fw 190A-8/R8, the Ju 88G-6 nf, the Ta 152H which was never able to prove itself and of course a load of what-if's

    go/ho-229 - It's just one of the coolest "almost" designs of ww2 - way ahead of its time.
