I found a mention to a General Order for my grandfather who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. It pertains to his combat infantry badge. Could someone please direct me to the right place to get a copy of this General Order? Thanks for all your help. The order is: GO #105, Hq. 23rd Inf., 5 Dec 44
Could you perhaps give us your Grandfather's full name, serial number and anything you know about which sub-units he was in that you know of, or specialities etc? - it may help - I searched a lot for the GO itself with no luck yet. Others will know better the US records system organisations where you might be able to apply for the info. Also what specific info are you looking for? - there may be other ways to find it than tracking down the GO.
Think you'll find that GO #105 for the 23rd Infantry Division will just contain a list of all the men in the Division that was awarded the CIB or any other decoration--Bronze Star, Silver Star etc. Headquarters of each Division would issue a GO to make something official and a way to keep a record of important events--they usually bunched a lot of stuff together and issued a General Order. To get a copy of the actual GO #105, 23rd Infantry Div. I believe you'll have to contact NARA and have them do a search in the Divisions files. Yor can get the requirments for receiving the CIB on the web Combat Infantryman Badge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It's an automatic award if the requirments are met. Anyone receiving the CIB is also entitled to the Bronze Star.
I am currently applying to have my grandfather's military records changed to reflect medals/awards that he should have received but are not on his record. I am trying to convince the Army that he was in two campaigns rather than just the one (Ardennes-Alsace) in which he died. I have a reference to the General Order regarding the CIB he received. If I can show the Army that General Order, which was before the Battle of the Bulge, then I can prove he was in more campaigns than just the Ardennes. My grandfather was in the 23rd Inf Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division. I try not to give names out online just for security reasons, so please don't be offended. I do not think the names would be in the GO anyway. Thanks again for your help.
Your concerns about security are completely unwarranted. Regardless, the names of the recipients of the CIB will be in the GO. Send an email to the NARA II, College Park, and tell the staff what you want: Archives2reference@nara.gov It is likely that the NARA will send you the GO at no charge. Dave
Thanks Dave. That's exactly what I was looking for. (As for the security issue, I'm a criminal defense attorney who has represented my share of people charged with identity theft, fraud, etc. AND I have had issues of my own with personal info being taken from me and used illegally. I wasn't really commenting about the type of people on this site, but as you know there is a criminal element out in the world who use their talents for the dark side. So I would not say it was completely unwarranted, but maybe a little paranoid.) Thanks again, you have been a real help.
Just a quick update to those who assisted me. The NARA already responded back to me via regular mail and indicated that they cannot find the Order, which I have been told is not uncommon for this regiment. Thanks again to everyone.
Just a quick update for those who assisted me in this thread. The NARA could not find the General Order I was looking for. But I did find a gentleman online who sells books/pamphlets for certain units containing the general orders for those units. He does not sell any pamphlets for the 23rd Inf Regiment, but he does have copies of the General Orders for the unit. Apparently he does some kind of subcontracting with the government wherein he takes requests from the public for copies of the Orders. Sounded kind of out of the ordinary, but I took a shot and I received my copy of the Order two days later. Now I can continue with my "reconsideration" with the Army Board regarding the correction of my grandfather's military record. Again, thanks to all that offered help before. If anyone is interersted in this guy's contact info, you can drop me a line.
