Hi my name is Gary,i have been an enthusiast about WW2 FOR A WHILE now. My Grandpa was an Aberdonian and was conscripted into the Gordon Highlanders, he was sent to hold the Fortress of Singapore. During hostilities and being a Military Policeman, he was shot riding his Motorbike, he was captured and sent to Changi jail to recover, once partly recovered he was sent to work on the railway at Borneo. He was imprisoned from 15.2.42 until 18.10.45. The bullet wound he recieved on his shin never fully healed up until his death on 14.12.1995, at the age of 81. Alec Morrice Grandson Gary..
Welcome to the forum T.Tasker, Sounds as if you will have some interesting History in your Family tree. Looking forward to reading more.
A prisoner of the Japanese...A hero in the only sense of the word. And one of the GREAT regiments. Welcome. Jaeger a fellow member is quite an expert follower of The Gordons I believe.
Hi and welcome to this forum! Do you have any stories about the time your Grandpa was in jail? How was his day, how they threaded him etc.?
My Grandpa never spoke much about his time as a POW, but through my Mum Aunt and other veterans that i have spoken to no one was spared the harshest brutality for the slightest offence. Death and torture was a daily occurrence and beheading with samurai swords, i've even heard the Japanese were canniballising allied prisoner's. On A LIGHTER NOTE I GOT INTO STUDYING WW2, WHEN I GOT LEFT MY Grandpa's Medal's and cap Badges, it made me look at him in a very different way, with what he and hundred's of thousand's of allied POW's went through, not to mention the one's who never survived it,my old vet friend who also survived called it the Asian Holocaust....
Welcome to this fine forum and enjoy your stay with us. There is quite a lot about the Pacific theatre, so have a great time browsing through the many threads.
Also my Dad was in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and was in Aden in 67 with Colonel Mad Mitch.
Sadly both have passed but i know plenty about my Dad's war experience as his brother and brother in-law were both their aswell, plus the fact their is a site dedicated to to the battle in Aden with a few pic's of my old man and and a what their duties were etc.
Well i sure think so thanks, i probably would have been in the Argyll's too, but losing my older brother at a young age put a stop to that, as my Dad said i was his only son to carry the family name, which i have done with 3 sons of my own. Thanks.
Hi G-T, that is great! Are you willing to share some of their stories with us? It would be much appreciated.
Most definately, one little taster for now as a boy i asked my Dad if he ever shot or killed anyone, and i allway's got the same answer, no i just fed the bullet's into the machine gun, i found out out within day's of him passing that he was a gunner and was the one gunning the enemy,,which in fairness looking back i would probably do the same in his position,as no one like's a braggart, and it may have screwed us kids up at the time.
