I am hoping that the early reports are true, and this civil war will wind down and a new democratic government can be initiated in this nation. I fear that there will continue to be inter-tribal warfare for many months if not years. They are nearly as fractured by tribe as Afghanistan, and we know how hard it is to unite that poor place.

Here is a link to the Al Jazeera English site which covers the demise of Gaddafi, while the exact method of his death remains vague.

Saw it on TV he is dead. Some sources said he was hiding in a sour pipe and that he got killed in a cross fire between his personnal guard and the Rebs.

Most probably he has been executed by the rebels...

plus A doctor who was in ambulance with him claimed that he died of two gunshots one in chest and another in head..looks like an execution.

I'm watching Al Jazeera live, and the complete circumstances of his demise remain a bit murky. They are saying that his body has been transferred to Misrada (sp?) where it is under guard in a mosque. When the international press is invited in to view his remains in the near future it will be really "confirmed" for all.

Why would you wish to insult more Muslims than America already has? Haven't we made enough enemies, and created more terrorists in the Islamic world already?

What a bunch of savages. The man had to die but to treat anyone like that...Shows the type of people who will soon lead the country. More violence to come I'd bet. At least NATO won't have to foot the bill for the rest of the s***show.....Saddam/Laden seemed to have a little more dignified ending....Also watched the celebrators in Libya. One well armed and equipped fellow raised his AK into the air and pulled the trigger. Only to have the AK spiral out of control. It was obvious he was not well acquainted with AK.. Kinda funny.

It's still a bit blury, I heard on the news that his convoy could have been stopped by a Nato Squadron with American and French aircraft. But he was still alive and armed. Then he supposedly headed to the sour pipeline and came out armed and was executed by his own people. The Lybian people are not to blame for what they did , similar examples are to be found eveywhere in the world. Mussolini is one of them.

The story im getting is he was wounded in the chest from the air strike...a rebel looked in a drain and found him cowering.."Dont shoot dont shoot" He was dragged out and paraded...slapt onto the bonnet of a car/or back of truck and driven to another location. He was then shot in the left temple killing him instantly. Some wanted to keep him alive...many didnt. He was then beaten by the crowd with their shoes (although the wounds look pre-mortem). The story he was still alive on his way to hospital seems bogus. And one commenter is right, this is a sad way for a peoples to extract revenge. I can only hope that "mob rule" is what we are seeing (can happen anywhere) not an official approach/solution...they dont seem much better than him if this is the case.

I can't really condemn the Libyans for doing what they did, since I haven't spent an hour under the guy's dictatorship, whereas most of them have spent a years/decades/lifetime under his thumb. From what I've heard of his regime, I'd probably be a little bit pissed and vent some anger myself. I do hope, though, like CAC said, that this is just a "mob rule" venting, sorta like Canada after a hockey game (har!), and not a "solution". I do hope that the tribes will be able to find some sort of common ground and come together.

I'm going by what Black Jack Pershing did in the Philippines with the Moros. He spread the word that he'd bury Moro dead with pig carcasses, and since being buried touching something unclean keep a Muslim out of paradise, the fight went out of the Moros. It's just a thought on my behalf.

Which might be, if traced out the very reason the Western world is still having trouble with the Muslims of the Philippines to this day. Purposefully insulting the one of the largest religions in the world is just thoughtless.

Not to mention that Gaddafi was overthrown, killed, and will presumably be buried by Muslims; he may have been already in accordance with their practice of burial within a day of death.

That may be correct I heard he was taken to a Mosk in Misrata yesterday. I still need confirmation for this info though.

The body is still being viewed as of this morning (US time), and the traditional burial time is being debated. There are problems with his final resting place perhaps becoming a "shrine" of some sort for those who still admire the man. It appears there are other problems, but those are Libyian problems we non-Muslims should stay out of.

Here is a link to a Time online magazine article on this.

Heard Gadaffi's son is still on the loose and may head to a region (near the border?) that is sympathetic, then cause more fighting.

Colonel Gaddafi’s highest-profile son and heir apparent, Saif al-Islam, has been captured in the western Libyan town of Zliten. Earlier, the eldest Gaddafi son Motassim was killed along with his father.

According to al Arabiya news channel, the NTC says it will show the pictures of Saif al-Islam after bandaging his wound

He had seven sons and one daughter, it appears that along with daughter Aisha and her mother Safi, two of his sons, Hannibal and Mohammed, are also in Algiers. His son Motassim died the same day as Gaddafi himself. Another of Gaddafi’s sons whose fate remains unclear is Khamis, but Gaddafi’s youngest/seventh son, Al Saadi, fled to neighboring Niger in September. According to local officials, he is under surveillance.
