He is no longer on the forum. I sent him to the Cooler, and he responded in a PM to me that he will no longer be posting. He feels "ganged up on" by some of the more senior members. I'll send you his PM reply, if you wish.

He will likely be back, I my self disappeared for a couple years after several member's on here became honest with me, May not have liked it at the time but in the end it was better for me, Made me grow up a bit more and to start using better grammar (May not be perfect but I think those that remember some of my first posts when I first joined can agree I have come a long way :D)

I couldn't care less about what he does in the future. I'd like some coherent (and factual answers), but I gave up after page 3. After all the frustration from this topic, I likely wouldn't even give his future messages the dignity of a response.

I guess I'm one of the 'senior members' he was referring to. If he thinks I am (and have nothing better to do than) 'ganging up' on him, he is very insecure. I have never considered myself a 'senior member' -- but I'll take it as a compliment.

When is it "ganging up" - and when is it just a LOT of people seeing the SAME faults with his hypothesis?

Simple matter of fact is, At the time there was too much hostility between the Netherlands and the UK, Japan and Britian where still friendly so helping to arm up a country that they hate so they could fight the Japanese is realistically stupid.

IF the ships had sat around in port for several years (Fat chance with the Washington naval treaty in 1922) then perhaps a few could have been passed on to the Netherlands after tempers had cooled down between the UK and Netherlands and Japan had been left out in the cold, But all likely hood is that by the time they happened the final ships would have been sunk or going through the breakers.

IF the Dutch had these ships would they have played a difference? In Europe, Not a chance in hell, I know there country side can get fairly wet and flooded, But not enough I assume to allow a Battle cruiser/ship to move up onto the land and act as a fortress =). In the Pacific? MAYBE but unlikely, Lookingb ack at how disorganized ABDA fprce was adding 2-4 battle cruisers wouldnt all of a sudden turn the tide, Realistically ABDA force would only have had a good chance IF te Naval unit in the Philippines had made a run for it when they knew of war breaking out, Thus by adding a good 3 - 4 dozen more ships (maybe could have picked up on Japanese movements sooner?) but that's all a different matter not suited for this thread.

    So in short,
Chance of getting them? Almost Nil,
Usefulness in WWII? Well they would make a few good more reef's at the bottom of the Pacific.

In fact - the more I think about it...being given relatively modern warships instead of building them for themselves might JUST have been playing into the hands of the pacifist movement in Holland! There might have been even more of an outcry about their replacement in the mid-1930s if they hadn't been built by the Dutch themselves!

Shame that First North has taken the sulks - we need people to ask the odd crazy question it gets the thought process working.

I thought he was treated quite courteously when his position became untenable. Hope he has the courage to return.

Although I can't see any possibility of Britain donating any warships to the Netherlands, Dutch submarines appear to have performed well in the Far East against the Japanese while Van Doorman's surface was completely obliterated due to lack of air support.

Can't believe that additional WW1 surface ships would have added anything to Dutch Naval strength but even some poor submarines might have helped.

firstnorth, If you would kindly post on this thread about the topic, Not about the drama that has come about.. This is not the Oprah thread.

Here is a question for you, Simple and straight to the point.

Considering the political feeling between the Netherlands and the UK do you truly believe that they would get there hands on any ships before the mid 1920's?

And if it drags out over such a time, DO you truly believe those ships would be allowed to be spared the Washington Naval treaty?

Since I might be one of the "burro-rumps", I'm closing this thread, again. The argument doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and the personal attacks are becoming tiresome. PM me if you have a problem with this.

The mike , on line is always on...
ITs like this. On a first rate site, a newbie may face 'test posting'. At a certain point, the Admins block all hostile posts. Life cools down & goes on.
I stopped answering GP on July 20 to let him 'cool down'. At that point the mad fun should have haltedf, not intensified.

If you check your member's lists, you loose a lot of new members - fast. Think about the reasons.

Actually, it's more like this. Boards come in different flavours, they tailor themselves to meet the expectations of the majority of the membership. Any Newbie should be aware of the "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" mentality, before they decide to join and engage the membership in MEANINGFUL discussion. This board in particular has certain expectations, and what many from other boards could consider a rather strict code of conduct. The "mad fun" you refer to resulted from an expectation of accountability that you weren't willing to meet. If that remains the case, if you find it stifling and you still want to push the envelope, perhaps you should consider looking around for a more freewheeling type of forum? That's perfectly OK. Personally, I started on uncensored, unmoderated boards back in the mid-90's, I'm not warm&fuzzy, and can be matter-of-fact. Even now I can step on toes without meaning to, if I err I will gladly apologize, I've accepted this board's decorum to post here.

Member's list problems on this site have more to do with the Malware problem, than the board's policy. It's been my experience that a majority of newbies who want to join discussions, but have a limited knowledge base, prefer boards of this type and enjoy the sense of camaraderie with wise like-thinking board "old-timers", rather than the confrontation you seem to prefer. Again, that's perfectly OK, just not here.

    Note to all...

If you don't like the way things are run around here, don't run your mouth in public.

I am more than willing to talk in private, though.
