The Longest Day (D Day film) (settle a bet,lol)

In the original film did the german actors speak in german with sub titles in english? or as in a trailer for the film I have seen speak (or have dubbed in) in english, saw the film in 1962ish and at least once more at the cinema, plus umpteen times on tv with VHS taped of such still, and in every one (far as I recall?) the germans spoke in german

When I saw it in the theater when it came out they spoke in German with subtitles. I was just a little kid but I remember walking home with my friends repeating Hans Blech's line, "They're heading right at me!" that he screamed into the phone when the fog lifted on the beach.

 

The Daves concur. I can remember one German character (an officer) saying about a proposed invasion that it would be "der lengste Tag."

The DVD I have has them speaking German with subtitles.

 

That is the only way I have ever seen it.

 

I've never seen that film overdubbed in English. All the times I've seen it, there were subtitles when the French spoke French, or the Germans spoke German.

The Brits (even the Scotsman playing an Irishman) spoke English and the Yanks tried to (no subtitles).

I saw this movie at the Graumans Chinese Theater on a school field trip (I also saw How The West Was Won at the same theater) and I'm sure the Germans spoke German and the French spoke their language as well.
