I recently heard from my parents that my grandfather was in WWII, and that this is the unit he served in. Can anyone give me some info on this battalion?
Just a quick google search and I found something that could help you. http://lhrainc.proboards.com/thread/563/209th-panzer-pioneer-battalion
I would be cautious with that; it looks like a very bad translation of German Wiki article on 11. Panzerdivision. "In the fall of 1942, the general staff of 11th infantry Brigade was fired." No, Stab/11. Schuetzenbrigade (mot) was renamed Stab/11.Panzergrenadierbrigade on 5 July 1942 and then was disdanded in 1943. "In February 1944, being one of the divisions surrounded in Cherkassy, it struggled to get out of the siege, so much that when it got out, it had lost nearly all its vehicles. To continue fighting, the division was reinforced by the remnants of the 123rd Infantry Division, for this to happen, it was removed from the front and sent to Bordeaux, France after receiving 273 personnel drawn from the Reserve Panzer Division." No. it was reformed in Bordeaux by merging the division remnants with 273. Reserve-Panzerdivision. "On 6 June the division was just beginning to arrive from the east for refitting, minus I./Pz.Regt. 15, which was at Mailly-le-Camp. As of 10 June the division, probably including elements of 273. Reserve-Panzerdivision, had on hand 26 Pz-III, 89 Pz-IV, and 8 StuG. On 15 June it absorbed 273. Reserve-Panzerdivision. The division covered the withdrawal of German forces from southern France during August and was not engaged in Normandy. As of 1 August it had a strength of 14,162 plus 810 HiWi and was only short 40 officers, 2 enlisted men and 41 HiWi, after receiveing 1,554 replacements and convalescents in July, while suffering just 41 battle casualties and 89 sick. It still had 8 StuG, but only 11 Pz-III (six operational), and 80 Pz-IV (74 operational). The 15 Pz-III and 9 Pz-IV “lost” since 10 June were probably turned over to other units or were sent in for complete rebuild." (Defending Hitler’s Atlantic Wall: The German Armed Forces in the West, D-Day 1944, manuscript, Richard C. Anderson, Jr.) http://www.privateletters.net/DOCUMENTS/arracourt/11thPanzers.pdf is a decent article from Armor Magazine that covers the division's late war history.
I notice people giving information on the 11. Panzer-Division. Is there any ENGLISH pages about the Battalion I'm looking for? And yes, I understand that the Battalion was part of the Division.
