Hello, gentlemen. My name is Mandrás Portokálas and as a veteran of the Greek Army I'd like to ask you what do you think about the performance of the armed forces of my country in world war 2. I am curious about it. I have seen how intelligent and good are the members of this forum and I thank the host of the site for honoring all the fallen men of all countries who died in world war 2.
Greetings, sir..and a very warm welcome indeed to the Forums ! I am ashamed to say that, with the exception of Partisan activity on the Island of Crete, my knowledge of Greece in WWII is almost non-existent. I hope that some of our more-informed members can reply to your posting, and enlighten me as well.....
Great to see a Greek Vet. Anyways I do know that the invasion of Greece by Italy was stomped, the Greeks were beating them everywhere, and the Greeks had almost captured Albania, then the Germans arrived, and they proved to be victorious, I hope to hear some of your stories.
Welcome Mandras, very pleased you joined. I don’t wish to open with searching questions, but I am very interested to learn more of your time in W.W.II as many of my friends and one of my family served in the Greek Islands, were the first into Athens, and thereafter were engaged in trying to suppress the Civil War which ensued to varying degrees. A few still return to Salonica most years to visit friends made there during the war. I have a photo of some Sacred Heart soldiers whom they were with for a time. I’m very interested to learn your memories of the political divisions as the Germans withdrew. Kind regards No.9
Welcome to the forums. I too would like to hear your stories on the Greek Army in WWII. That area of the war did not get much attention in the history books that I have found and read. I always wondered if the Russian Army came into your country or just near by ?
Welcome to the forum!! I don't know much about the Greek army, but I know they crushed the Italian attackers.
Welcome to the forums. I know very little about the Greeks. But I do know that they fought bravely against an Italian force that outnumbered the Greeks. Basically the Greeks whooped the Italians until the Germans arrived. I too hope to hear some of your stories. Jet
Ah the Greeks, my choice in a previous thread a few weeks ago for the best none major allied fighting force of ww2. I too am interested in the immediate actions after liberaton when Churchil commited airborne to interviene in the following civil war disturbances.
Hello sir and welcome to the forums. I think the Greeks fought valiantly and very well also given that they had next to nothing to fight with. I also have always admired the stand at Klissura and Klidi Pass's. As they were fighting against the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and men like Kurt "Panzer" Meyer.
Hallo, sir! Welcome to the forums! My grandfather (a veteran from the invasion of Greece, with 9th Panzer division) has told me a lot of good things about the brave Greek soldiers who defended their fatherland, even if they couldn't do much against the mighty and then unbeated Wehrmacht. But I have also read many things about the Greek counteroffensive and the astonishing Italian defeats. That speaks very well of the 'bad and old Greek armed forces' as were described in those years.
Yassou, im a fellow greek, living in australia, i would like to know what the greeks did during ww2...
G-Banger, here is a site that is mostly about the Balkans but is still a great site if you would like to know about what the Greeks did in ww2. www.geocities.com/drammos/ww2.html This site is ok but mainly tells the battle between the Greeks and the Italians from an Italian Perspective. www.strategypage.com/af/articles/20020813.asp They are not great sites but they are a start. Just hope they work Jet
Relatively small numbers fought against foreign forces, most did much of nothing except fight among themselves when the Germans left, usually prevented from killing each other by the British forces that were tied up there, during the war, acting as peace-keepers. No.9
I had a look through, didn't really think that they were what if scenarios. Thanx for that Lupo Solitario.
